A-Bolt Mountain Ti - any good?

I really like mine. It is really accurate...I was surprised at how well mine shoots. I think the overall craftsmanship is great and the fit and finish is above avarage for sure. I have equiped mine with the talley ring/base marketed for the A-bolts by browning.

I prefer my A-bolts over most of the other guns I have. My 700's have come and gone...I really enjoy my T3...But the A-bolts are still my personal preference. I like the magazine system especially on range days and the 60 degree bolt throw is really nice as well
 
I really think a visit to a store that carries them is in order. I was all stoked about these rifles until i met a fellow at the range who had one in 300 WSM.

it really was light!! I was impressed with that, compared to my old toad of a ruger M77 (10 lb with the mag full) and even my savage M14 euro classic. It also came up to the shoulder quite nicely and i liked that dura finish or whatever it is called. it was "grippy"

HOWEVER: the bolt was composed of some synthetic material (i guess for weight considerations) that moved about as smoothly as a new basketball shoe on a polished floor. Awful compared to the silky smooth actions that i think are important for re-chambering a round. the groups were not that tight - although factory loads were being used and no handloads worked up yet. And the trigger was begging for a professional to lighten it up to a tolerable pull weight. And those weird detachable mags that have to be put on the floor plate - maybe i am just a spaz; i get frustrated when and i just want to rip off the floor plate and ram the mag home:mad:

so i don't own one, but i got to do that ever important handle/fondle prior to purchase. so i think you gotta go and pick one up and make a choice as to whether the price is justified or not. all the best and good shoot'n! JSD
 
The mag system on the A-bolts is definatly a personal preferance think. But On the range there is no real need to remove the mag. I simply drop the floor plate and reload the mag while it is still attached and then I simply close the floor plate. I find it is really quick and easy to manipulate. BUT yes always go and handel the gun you are thinking of buying....if you have the oppertunity
 
I just bought one in 7mm-08 for sheep hunting after an extensive amount of research and looking at both the Remington Ti and the Browning. Put Talley mounts on that are designed for the gun and a VX3-3.5x10x50. Picked up both guns in the store and the Browning felt better. This is my first Browning (have several Tikkas and Remingtons). Bashaw Sports has the Browning and the Remington on sale right now (limited caliber choices).

Loaded some 140 gr Nosler Accubonds using Varget. Have not been to the range yet but am looking forward to trying it out.

Brownwing Pros
1. Weight
2. Hinged box mag (almost a detachable mag!!!)
2. Durable stock finish
3. Cost

Browning Cons
1. Action is not super smooth

Remington Pros
1. Weight
2. Appearance (very sharp looking gun)
3. High quality stock

Reminton Cons
1. Cost
2. Floor plate seems flimsy

There have been some posts on here detailing poor accuracy on the Remington. No personal experience here.

Hey shortaction (sorry I forgot your name). Perrys has one in .325 WSM if you want to check one out next time you're in the big city :D. I though they fealt great except for the mag system...not my cup of tea. Also the shape of the pistol grip wasn't quite my thing either.

The plastic you speak of is a shroud over the bolt and yes it is for weight considerations.
I think if they where to put a regular bolt in the Ti it would add another 3 oz to the gun.
Really, how hard is it to load three rounds into the magazine when you get out of your vehicle and ready to walk in to your spot?
It aint rocket science there, it just takes some getting used to .

I bought one in 325wsm late last fall and have had not any time to play with it, suffice to say that I like Browning A-bolts and I like the feel, weight , and swing of this one.

As for the guys who do not like the magazine arrangement on an A-bolt, the same can be said about the cheap bolt shroud on those other rifles that start with a T someing or other.
If you like how it feels and the caliber is what your after and the money is in your pocket, buy it.
No need to ask us in the peanut gallery for permission ;)

I considered getting one in .300WSm for a while, but ended up with a Remington Ti Alaskan. I like the Browning, but could not get myself to accept the plastic parts o hte bolt. Plus I know that I can find all sort of aftermarkets parts and stocks for the remington, not so much the Browning.

I am extremely pleased with my Remington.

To be fair Willer, I GPS'd my Moose hunting routine I walk twice a day. It's a series of 4 ridges that spanned 14KM there and back. Not a sheep hunt, but still...a light gun would be kindly appreciated :D
 
i'm pretty interested in this rifle as well. no stores around here have one in stock to get a feel of it though. guess i'll have to get down to ellwood epps sometime
 
i thought i wanted one till i got to play with a ti. rifle i liked, felt good to hold and point. the bolt was crap. i would take a flued steel bolt and a couple of onzes more weight.
