A-Bolt pros and cons

I hate the magazine system,and apparently so do other people seeing as how it is not being used on the X-Bolt.I am also not fond of the tang safety,and the stock design is not very effective at absorbing recoil.As for pros,the fit and finish are quite good,as is the accuracy.
 
I had one for many years chambered in 30/06. It was my 'go to' rifle and was very accurate with both factory rounds and reloads. I did not mind the detachable magazine system but some people hated it. The first thing I did after I purchased it was to strip off that gawd awful plastic coating from the stock. I sold it five or six years ago to a co-worker. At the time I was recovering from a shoulder injury and the recoil of the 30/06 was down right painful. Today, I'm sorry I sold it but I regret selling every firearm I ever owned except one.
 
Seems a lot of guys hate the A Bolts, but my synthetic, SS, .270 is probably my favourite hunting rifle. I've had it for about 17 yrs. and it is the the gun that I always take for coyotes. I actually, really like the magazine set up. I can't really figure out how you can lose the mag., since it clips into the floorplate. My A Bolt is light, accurate, has a better than average trigger and has never failed me. The short bolt lift is nice, but the bolt doesn't cycle as smoothly as I would prefer. That's as bad as it gets from my point of view. From a buyers perspective, I guess it's a good thing that lots of guys hate them. It should bring down their prices if no one wants them
 
No experience with the A-Bolt, but I have a BBR which is very similar and I love it. I like the magazine as it gives the best of both worlds IMO. I find it to be a very accurate rifle. The only con for me is the action is a little rough.
 
Love 'em or hate 'em.... you never seem to see many for sale used.

I think that says a lot about them. Personally, I like them. Especially the composite & stainless stalker models with the synthetic stocks.

Right now I have only one, in .300 Win Mag. Have had 'er about 15 years. A keeper.

The magazine definitly, especially with larger cartridges like the .375 H&H that I have. Not crazy about the BOSS either, thought the muzzle break is nice.
 
I had 2 and will never buy another.They were both .270's and between the magazine and the excessive muzzle jump I just wasn't impressed.
 
I have one in 243 for coyotes,it is over 25 years old.I Love the magazine which was the reason I purchased it,there were no other rifles that I can remember with a magazine at that time.The gun came bedded from factory and the trigger set by gun smith.The gun shoots great with the original barrel and the thumb safety is fast.
I would buy another.

Ditto with my .280 A-Bolt. Mine's a lefty which is nice. Deer, bear and moose. My .280 has killed over 60 big game animals and a batch of yotes. I see no need to ever buy another big game rifle as long as this one keeps shooting the way it has. I actually like the mag system.

Brand new, I got the rifle, scope and bipod for $1000 about 10 years ago. It's earned its keep and then some.
 
Am I the only guy that has an A-Bolt with a hinged magazine?

I like my A-Bolt. Chambered in .270 I only use it for deer hunting. It downed 6 deer. ( we are only allowed one per year). I reload so accuracy is less than 1/2 min. @ 100yds.
As a hunting rifle it's worth the money.

Pros:
accurate, fairly cheap in price

cons:
Too light, heavy recoil, The barrel is prone to heavy copper fowling. Hard to clean. Not a good gun for competions. You could do better with the Remingtons
