A-Bolt pros and cons

Hello....
For those whose hate all are the Browning ...please give them to me ,i'll take all what you have.:p:p:p

Had an abolt in 300wm with a 4-12 scope. Beautiful rifle, and almost unbelieveably accurate at distances even I couldn't believe.
Had to sell in one winter when our family was young and we were broke.
Wish I still had it.
Don't believe anyone who whines about the hinged plate with the clip on mag. It's different, but a great system.

The worst thing about A-Bolts, besides their fiddly magazine setup, is that they pale in comparison to the previous generation of Browning bolt actions, which used FN Mauser long actions and Sako short actions.

I just can't get excited about most of the newer bolt action designs; I prefer Mauser type actions.

I own a left hand Stainless Stalker (A-bolt I) in .30-06. Prior to it, I hunted with a Win model 94 .30-30 and a Rem 760 .308.

Pros: nice balance; accurate; weatherproof
Cons: magazine--detachable box is good, but I would prefer a straight drop out instead of being clipped to a hinged plate; can't unlock the bolt with the safety on; no controlled round feed

Overall, I am very happy with it.

the only thing i dont like about mine is its hard to load a single shell into the action- that may be because its a 22 hornet. Its very accurate well finished, nice wood. The trigger on mine sucked way too heavy but that was easy enough to fix

I have owned a couple of the A-Bolt Brownings, a 338 Win Mag I acquired in a trade and a 270 that passed through my hands several years ago. Have no love for them at all. Mine were accurate, I'll give them that much. The Magazine system is an abortion. The triggers are crap! [I have seen two A-bolts with broken off triggers] The stocks do not feel good with heavier recoiling chamberings. The wood stock finish is far too shiny. All you A-bolt lovers can keep them. Eagleye.

Unlike others have stated, I think a tang safety is great since it's completely silent. Try taking the safety off silently on a factory Win M70.

Methinks the noise of the safety is redundant if one is taking a 1000 yard shot like some claim to on this board. :stirthepot2: :nest: :D

I bought one about 25 years ago when they first came out in the stainless stalker model in 30/06. It has never given me any trouble at all. It is light and short for whitetail hunting especillay in dirty wet weather when snow tracking. I like the removeable clip, you can just flip the floor plate open and pull the clip out.

Amen to that...i m a new shooter and love mine. I bought it used for $800 with a leupold VXII 9x40 w/BOSS and it is deadly accurrate and well made. I love the hinged plate so you dont accidentially drop it in the mud.

It kick way less then my buddies 270 because of the muzzle break. We both shot it at 100 yds, mine was through the center, his was .25 inch off.

They get a A+ from me....my .02

I imagine they'll work fine.

I always wondered why nobody builds a custom on an A Bolt?

Must be a reason for this?

I need me one of those stickers. ;)

I have a buckmark sticker, but have never owned an A-bolt. I do like my Citori very much though...:D

My F-I-L has a couple A-bolts, and I can't bring myself to like them. They don't feel right to me, the mag is annoying, although you can treat it like a blind mag if you want. The action feels clunky, and they're just plain ugly... Everytime I pick one up I feel blah, then I pick up his M70 Featherweight, and I feel much better...:D

I own two of them, and really like them. One is a .308, micro Medallion and it's gorgeous. I've taken more game with that rifle than all the rest put together. Of the 100's of rifles I've tried and sold, I have kept this one. ;)

Now I have a stainless Stalker in .280, and it is magnificent. Here's the first 100 yard, 3 shot group I shot with it with the cheapest factory ammunition I could locate.
