A-Bolt pros and cons

I love my A-Bolt II 22 250. Carries nice and shoots very well. Would an a-bolt be a wilderness rifle for guiding in Alaska? Likely not, but for the average hunter they are a dependable, accurate rifles.

I have used mine in blowing snow, freezing rain, rain, and have never had an issue.

I have a good friend with an a-bolt 30-06 that has shot countless animals all over Canada and has never had an issue. He likes the a-bolt so much that he recently bought a 243 Win a-bolt for his son.

The trigger is a bit creepy on my A-Bolt. The stock geometry isn't perfect for me, but pretty good. It will shoot MOA or better with all ammo, and half that with some handloads. It's utterly dependable in all weather and shoots consistently.
I prefer a tang safety to any other, so that's a big plus for me. I'm glad some posters explained WHY they don't like aspects of the rifle....usually they just try to be witty and make it about half way there by saying "It's an A-Bortion....hyuk hyuk!" and not explaining why that is. The frozen tang safety is something I'd never heard of. Interesting.
I personally really like the mag system. I could see why people who prefer pop-out mags or floorplates wouldn't, but I think it's great. Time to load? Drop the plate, click in the mag, close the plate, done. Time to unload? Drop, click, snap, done. The most loose cartridges you may have to fuss with is one. That's a HUGE plus when it's cold out. I dislike unloading my Ruger and my Winchesters in comparison. I can unload the A-Bolt with gloves on and not drop a round. That's a small point, but so are most of the cons.
That 60 degree bolt throw is a feature I like, and I also like the lozenge-shaped grasping knob. I can work that bolt very quickly, wearing heavy gloves, and my fingers clear the scope bell by a mile.
It may not be the greatest rifle ever made, but I personally would buy another without hesitation. I've owned or borrowed Ruger, Winchester, Remington, BSA, and I prefer my A-Bolt to any others I've owned or tried so far. Mind you, I like the detachable mag, so I'd likely feel the same if my .280 were a Rem 700 DM.....but for different reasons.

Pro:
I like the bolt assembly design. Not because it works exceptionally well but because it's an interesting, cost effective way to make a bolt. The enlarged rear section reduces cocking effort.
I kind of like the receiver shape. Aesthetically speaking. Bedding surface is limited.
Cons
Trigger sux
Mag system sux
Stock shape falls just short of really sucking but does create a slight vacuum.
Evidence of lug set back on some A-Bolt receivers I have examined makes me question the strength and durability.
I don't like 60 degree bolt lifts since the extraction cam is shortened.
It does not make my list of rifles I'd like to own. Regards, Bill.
