Snider Enfield, that is.

I did this mod myself! And the internet said I was crazy. I will show you who's crazy.. Well they didn't quite word it that way.. I think they said "danger to the public."

It is a removable insert.. so no status changes I would assume. (non-registered).

It has it's own little barrel actually. The insert is about the size of a Snider cartridge - a little longer - and has a rifled barrel.

I would have liked a custom made one with a full-length barrel from mc-arse, but those guys don't respond to email.

I haven't taken it to the range yet but my goal was to get it to hit a balloon at 25 yards. I did check the ignition on a blank and it strikes the primer every time.

Hmmmmmm, trapdoor 22 rimfire Snider Enfield

what happened to the sling swivel, chain and snap cap?
Have something on that order for the Martini. .22 cal, Only its brass and shaped like the cartridge. (short rifle barrel inside the case.)

Yes, it is for the extractor which is a musket pick by the way. Since I leave the insert in there (blue loctite) I needed a solution to get the empties out.

The plan is to get that leather cap and sling swivels which someone removed when cutting the gun down (or at some other time, god knows). I will attach the musket pick with the leather snap cap... when I can locate one.

This is nit picking, IIRC, an antique becomes a registerable firearm if altered to fire .22 ammo. Of course.... you may have 30 days to notify CFC.

It's not altered. That's a removable adapter. If some authority wants me to prove it I think the robust Snider extractor would break the loctite bond.

All that remains is to see how accurate this idea is. Most report "reasonable" accuracy at short ranges... that's all I wanted.

So how long is the inner barrel? (My wife wondered whether the .22 round would strike the outer barrel if you jerked the rifle while firing.)
I don't remember when a thread has made me smile this much...

I think you'd have to be a super-human jerk to do that. Faster than the speed of sound anyhow. Perhaps I'm wrong? Anyone want to challenge this with their knowledge of physics? The barrel's only a litle longer than a standard Snider cartridge minus the space required for a .22LR chamber.

The whole adapter is shorter than a 20 gauge shot shell.

They sell these inserts for many types of shot guns, so I imagine they have a track record.

Anyone know where to get the parts for this I'm missing (ie snap cap, swivels)?

Well I think it's cool, and I'm sure it would never stay installed for more than 30 days anyway. I have Snider too, and some .22 barrels... now you've given me ideas!
Why not an insert that fits a full length .22 barrel inside the snider's barrel? Slides in from the muzzle and screws into a block at the breech that fits the chamber of the snider. Brass bands mounted on the outside of the .22 barrel would prevent scratching the bore and line it up inside the .577 bore.
Darn! the fireing pin would strike center.... hmmm

That's why my barrel is offset.

My insert is a home-made reproduction. Apparently they actually made these for Sniders for training purposes. I've seen an apparent original on an auction site. This is uncorroborated.

I think a full length barrel would be a grand idea.

The snider pin puts an awful dent in the .22 case... my my.

Why not just make the brass rings from thick stock, drill a hole in them off-centre big enough for the .22 barrel, put one on each end and maybe one in the middle? They would be like really thick washers.

Sorry to burst your bubble but that is now a registerable firearm.

How do you figure?

That's like telling someone who bought the shotgun inserts that they have to re-register their 12 gauge to a .22LR because it's a calibre change while in use. Of course when they pump it and eject the insert they have to re-register again.
