A Conservative with whom I could not disagree more

You do realize the man was paralyzed in a car-moose accident? I would like to see increased hunting opportunities in any area where this is an issue. Rather see hunters taking the meat than it lying dead on the side of the road. Is there some issue with shooting Newfie moose that you'd like to elaborate on? The original post doesn't really offer anything other than you disagree....

Edit: missed the part about killing all the moose on the island in my first go through. Oops. I'm still in support of increased hunting to limit the issue though.

Of course. As (I hope) you know, being a victim of a tragedy doesn't make one an expert on what caused the tragedy. The errors and suppositions contained in Mr. Fletcher's article go towards proving it.

Culls have nothing positive to do with hunting. Hunters might be brought in to facilitate the cull, but future hunting opportunities for that species are necessarily reduced. That's the objective of the cull in the first place.

If you read the entire article that Mr. Fletcher wrote, you'll find that he advocates annihilating the moose from the island of Newfoundland completely and forever. Any hunter or conservationist wishing to see or have an opportunity to hunt or simply observe moose here in the future would obviously tend to disagree. Count me among them. The fact is the number of accidents has more to do with the nature of our highway system, poor driving habits, etc, than it does with the numbers of moose.

I listened to his interview on CBC radio. I am sorry that a moose accident put him in the predicament that he is in, but to totally destroy every single moose on the island is insane. Maybe this guy is just looking for the spotlight, I don't know. But to blame a wild animal that knows no boundarys is a bit much. Poor driving attitudes are to blame for a high percentage of accidents.

This is Harper's fault - he took away Mr. Fletcher's assignment in the last cabinet shuffle!

Culling the whole herd to zero? That is pretty extreme without even acknowledging any other options.
 
How many people here know of the round goby, zebra mussel, asian carp or other invasive species?. The moose is just that, an invasive species not native to Newfoundland. The red squirrel although cute to some is also a import that has impacted the rock. The European Green Crab is now threatening marine stocks in parts of Newfoundland as well. If government efforts to eradicate or control these animals the moose has to be considered as well. Just because it is a large,majestic game animal it has no business in the ecology of the island.

Why stop there...pacific salmonids in the Great Lakes, ring-neck pheasants anywhere in North America, brookies and browns in Alberta streams...The list can go on and on....some non-native species are a welcome guest.

I am well aware of all of the species you mention. The moose has been here for over a century, even before the automobile. It also does not pose a threat to the island's ecology and has been managed as a game species for decades. Entirely different scenario than the species you name. Control (i.e. wildlife management) is fine, its what we've been doing for many years, successfully. Eradication for no good reason is an entirely different thing.

Agreed. I wouldn't worry too much, I doubt any politician is dumb enough to actually bring a bill which outlines the complete annihilation of a species before their respective legislative body; it would be political suicide.
 
Friend of ours was killed in a car, moose collision and not in some remote bog area in northern Alberta, but a well settled agricultural area. What's the problem here ? how could anyone of you object to increased hunting opportunities with the aim of reducing the number. Been pressure for this in Newfoundland for year. Give your heads a shake , guys.
