A couple of questions!

I would like to get another 7x57 done. I would like to do it on a rem 700 stainless action. My question is can an existing rifle be bored out and re chambered or would it be smartest to have it re barreled? It doesn't matter to me as I don't have the rifle yet. Also would any rem 700 long action work? Or would a certain calibre be best. Thanks for the help guys!

There really isn't any other cartridge out there that is suitable for conversion to 7x57 with the possible exception of the 280 Rem. In the case of the 280 it's kind of iffy that there would be enough meat left in the chamber area to clean out all of the 280 chamber enough for the 7x57 because of the shoulder diameter differences. bearhunter

Get a decent 700 action, buy a good barrel blank from Ted Gaillard or Ron Smith, and go for it. Any long action 700 with the standard '06 size boltface will work just great, The 7x57 is too long for a short action though. When ordering the barrel, I would specify a 1-9" twist (or 1-8"), not the 1-10" that are also available. That way you can shoot any weight bullet through your 7x57. Long live the 7x57!! Far less expensive in money and time to re-barrel. In 7mm Mauser it's going to be a custom barrel, so it won't be cheap. You'll have to find a smithy who has the chamber reamers and headspace guages or you'll be paying for that too. The action will need a bolt face that is at least close to the cartridge head diameter. You will be able to sell whatever barrel you buy and offset the cost somewhat though.

A .280 barrel could be set back and rechambered, if you could find a good rifle in .280. Of course, if you found a good .280, there would be absolutely no point in converting it to 7mm.
So buy a sound rifle with a long action and a .473" boltface, buy a fine barrel in 7mm., and have a smith put it together for you. If it costs less than $1000, you've done well.

Why not just find a nice Mauser Sporter in 7x57 ? Would probably be cheaper in the long run.
