I was in my shop a while ago, and in a quiet moment (had my hearing aids on) I heard a plaintive cry,
It came from a 2 inch round bar of steel~ The voice said " I used to be a German target rifle. but was turned into a axle shaft by a wicked Liberal Jas...witch. If you kiss me with an end mill, I will try to regain my old form." What else could I do?
To be serious......
Some of you may remember my feeble attempts at rifle builds. I have been cooped up (no, not Mexican beer disease) so to pass the time, I decided to have a go at another rifle.
Started with a 2 inch round and after some milling..

Did a bit more. I realized that the part as in last pic was too shallow.

I welded 1/2 inch extensions on the bottom, and trimmed the welds.

Sprayed with ink to show up better.
Now on to the breech block.

So here is the beginning of the breech block

Was asked about barrel - Thinking of 22 Hornet, or 17 Hornet, or maybe a 38spl/25 "wildcat"?
So am wondering what is out there -suggestions?

I am following along with interest. Regarding what to chamber it in, Ruger and Winchester apparently came up with the 256 Win Mag back in 1961. It was a 357 mag case necked down to 25. My Hornady manual lists 1900-2400 fps with a 60gr bullet, 1600-2100 with a 75gr bullet and 1300 to 1800 with an 87 grain bullet. This is with an 8-1/2" barrel. This info is from Hornady sixth edition. The manual says they could get almost 600fps more from a rifle (Marlin 62). Just a thought.
