I've posted up a couple of my rifles that I've either built or customized myself and thought I'd share another one.
This one is another that I built by myself with the exception of the welding which I have a professional welder do with TIG welding.
The barrel came to me as a prethreaded, contoured, crowned, and short chambered unit. I think it was a Monatana barrel but it's been a long time. I installed it and finish reamed it for proper headspace.
Because the Roberts is an intermediate length cartridge, I used a Mauser model 1903 action. These are a large ring intermediate length action with small ring threads. I lost count of how many hours I put into the metal to get it looking the way I wanted but the number is way up there. If any of you are familiar with Turk milsurps, they are usually beat up pretty good and this action was no exception. There was a lot of polishing, grinding, and filing to straighten it up. It still isn't perfect but looks decent. I jeweled the bolt, cut the trigger guard back to commercial profile around the front screw and removed the charger hump. I didn't ruin any complete milsurp to build this and in fact bought 4 of these actions all in pieces in a box for dirt cheap. I took the best parts to make this action and ended up with a complete action with almost no wear but just cosmetic issues.
It has a Wolff striker spring, Bold trigger, Timney Buhler style safety, and Leonard Brownell bolt handle. Action is full length bedded and the barrel is free floated. The finished rifle is actually quite heavy but it's short and quick handling and has been used on a few hunts to take a good whitetail and a decent mule deer. It's kind of gaudy looking for sure and even though my tastes have changed to more traditional looking hunting rifles, I still like it.
Handloads with Barnes 100gr TSX shoot under an inch at 100yds. I haven't chrony'd the loads yet but I'll get to it eventually.
