A day in the snow

Not sure where the proper place to post this would be, but I figured this would be the best.

Just another day on our home made range, shooting 100 yards in the snow. My cuz with his Cooey 60 with a 3-9x40 bushnell and my Savage Mark II with irons.

Got the fire on our backs to keep warm and warm the hands for reloading mags. Just acquired the savage from a friend for a reasonable price, and I'm quite impressed at it's accuracy at the range with iron sights. Once I had everything set properly, I was consistently hitting the plate not much bigger then a ice cream bucket lid about 95% of the time. And of course the scoped Cooey hit virtually every shot. It's tough too see in the pic, but there's 2 posts with a circle thing in the middle just under the arrow... thats the target.

Any ideas on a good scope for my savage that won't break the bank too bad?

ah, snow, guns... it's all good. I love the snow, and shooting. The only problem was the snow getting in the eyes while trying to aim haha

I would love to do that but is ai -40c right now. its bad enought going out side to drive to work. let alone a few hours punching holes

yeah, it definately got chilly when we went to go look at the target, by the time we left there was more snow on the ground then the pic. We even brought the SKS along for the ride, but didn't even touch it, were having too much fun hearing the PAP! P-TING!, PAP! P-TING back and forth. Now that we both have .22s we can have our own little plinking games

Looks like another great day for shooting! As for a scope you could trythe EE for Tasco or Bushnell scopes, I would try and stay in the 4-16 power minimum range for following your shots at 100 yards though.

Look at Mystic Precision's website - he has a great line of budget scopes that are very good from Sightron.

Do you find the accuracy of your rimfire decreases when it's cold out?

If you are not picky, a Busnell Sportview 3-9 x 32 or 40 with AO (adjustable objective) will suffice.

A Bushy Banner 4-12 x 40 with AO will give clearer images.

Neither are considered mid or premium glass. Just plain ole adequate rimfire scopes.

Over on http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/index.php they really like the Mueller APV as a cheap scope. I just picked up a Mueller 8.5-25x44AO Tactical and I have to say it is pretty good for the price. It obviously isn't a luepold but for the price it does the job well.

to be honest, this is the first time I've had it out. Picked it up from a friend a while ago and hadn't been able to use it. Once I got it sighted in, I was more then impressed on how consistant it was shooting an 18" steel plate at 100 yards. The Cooey didn't seem to like to moisture too much though, getting close to the end of our fun it was having troubles chambering rounds, and FTF rounds cause the pin wasn't striking hard enough.

I can't wait to get a scope on it and see what kind of groups I can shoot

Thanks for the idea's on the scopes, I'll look into them, see what I can find. Something half decent at least.

The savage is a great little gun, especially for the money. I have one and i can consistantly hit 4-5" groups at 100m with the irons. I'm sure if i really tried i could get it a bit tighter. When i had my bushnell 3-9 scope on it i could get 2" consistantly. I think their awesome rifles and your gunna be happy with yours from the sounds of it.

yeah, I'm quite happy so far. Not sure what groups I was hitting cause anything we out up on the plate would just fall off, but from the looks of all the little scuffs (it's a pretty heavy plate, SKS barely penetrates it) it looked like 200+ rounds were hitting pretty close too center at a 6in group.

I was thinking of a 3-9x40 scope, probably a bushnell, I don't want to get some cheap chinese brand and regret it later. It may only be a .22, but it'll get used the most out of everything, so why not get some reasonable glass for your most used plinker

keep in mind the cooey needed to be cleaned pretty badly when we started, and worse towards the end. Never knock the Cooey

Anything other than an Elite series Bushnell will be made in China, shop accordingly.

For a reasonable amount of money the 3200 series Bushnells show-up used from time to time on the EE, and their worth it.

Seriously check out Mueller, do some research on their reviews. The Mueller 3-10×44 Tac II is made in Japan using Japanese glass.

haha, yeah I guess your right, just about everything is made in China these days... I think I was getting more at something with the Presidents Choice label on it (not that they make scopes) or any other cheap brand.

I have a 3-12X40 cabelas turret scope on my Cooey 60 and love it! On a nice calm evening I've shot it out to 325yd on a 13" gong. At 12X you can watch the bullet trace.
