I picked up a spare handguard and Bubba'd it a bit. I pre-measured where I wanted the 'holes' to be, then drilled them to a depth not quite touching
the gas tube, sanded it, cleaned it up, and rattlecanned it flat black. I suppose I could've drilled right the way thru if I was in the mood to separate the two pieces (but we all know what a hassle that can be!) there was the greater possibility of it splitting, and besides, I don't think it matters in terms of cooling if the holes don't go all the way thru or not.
I'm happy with the 'look', even tho it's purely cosmetic.

Keep an eye on it. With use the paint will wear off and any cleaner or solvent that touches it will cause the paint to dissolve and wipe away.

You can use a sealer, but that will develop a glossly looking sheen that won't look nearly as good as the matte. That will also be susceptible to various agents.

FWIW, Chinese handgaurds are much easier to remove than the Ruskies.

thx for the tip, EL. Yeah, I could put a satin clear-coat on it, but re-spraying the flat every so often is no biggy.
BTW-- I thought getting that pin back in was the hassle for reassembling the gas tube assembly.
I've got a black plastic handguard left over from a Tapco Bubba stock that I've never used....

very good job! kudos for making it your own and +1 for pissing off the purists! win win!
