A Do it all Gun for a Newbie

Mossberg maverick 88 12g with the normal, accuchoke ventrib barrel and a slug barrel. Barrel changes out in less than a minute. At responsible distances, it will put down pretty much any game you would want to hunt with 3" magnum slugs :)

Brothers gun

He could look into some of the sporterized military guns...6.5x55swede, 7.62 NATO, British .303 and the like...I'm no expert, but they are quite often available for cheap, and are generally accurate. Ammo by the case will be cheapest, but I have yet to find a supplier for the 6.5 stuff by the case (it is around a buck a round). The NATO stuff can be had much cheaper.
Good luck.

I have an issue with recommending a military sporter as a first rifle. Don't get me wrong, they can be a great buy and it's possible to get a great hunting rifle for very little $$$$. The issue I have is that it's also possible to get a real POS. If someone is new how are they to know the difference? How will they troubleshoot if the rifle prints 10" groups? Someone new to the game ought to stick to factory rifles that can be backed with real, current reviews.
