A Dollar/Pound Scrap Lead?

If it's good, clean, known alloy, in usable size pieces then that's a good price.
If it needs to be melted and cleaned then it's not as good but if it's the best stuff you can find then it's still not a bad price - availability is everything.

I'm not sure what it is. He said wheels weights and roofing gaskets...probably a mix of what ever people drop of. I might be able to go through it and pick and choose. Problem is I don't really know what I'm looking for....

One of the scrap places I buy lead from occasionally also jacked up the lead price to a buck recently.
Used to get it there for 0.60/lb

Where do you want to use it for? Pistol, rifle, shot ?

Be very careful buying wheel weights at that price. So much steel and zinc mixed in nowadays that it will be expensive after the loss/waste.
Roofing gaskets are probably very long and small strips of soft lead and has probably a lot of oxidation on it.
I would look for large chunks of lead if they are available. Much easier to clean, less fluxing required and way less smoke than wheel weights.
Gently drop them on the concrete floor to "hear" how soft or hard the lead is or scratch it.
With some practice you quickly know what to look for.

Good luck.

I think I'm gonna be loading subsonic 308win but I'm not 100% on that. I'm interested it trail boss and cast bullets in a 308win

If you do end up picking up pure lead you will need to add sometime to make it harder as its to soft for anything besides musket balls really. I use 3 pounds pure lead to 1 pound wheel weight lead as my mix. I gas check my 30 cal rounds for my 30-30 as well as powder coat all the lead I cast. I have run them without checks above 1300fps with no lead and with the checks to just about 1800fps with no lead in the barrel. Make sure you size them correctly.

I cast, water quench, let sit a week or more, powder coat, then size. They turn out 13-14bnh by my hardness tester.

Roof gasket around $0.65 ish depending on how much tar is on it. Wheel weights I would not pay more than $0.50/lb usually I pay $0.35. Scrap yards are paying around $0.25 for wheel weights and $0.50/lb for other lead

I found a guy that will sell me wheel weights for $0.20/# are wheel weights typically mixed at this price. Could I end up with more than half of it being garbage?

Usually they are mixed at any price. Last time I got some there was 3 almost full 5 gallon pails. Almost ¾ of a pail of crap after sorting.

I would say its not a problem at all when handled properly. Same as with all other lead types.

I was just talking to my brother about this. We decided it was better to take the battery in for 10 bucks and put the money into another source of scrap lead.. .even if you find scrap lead at a buck a pound imho it's a more economical source and use of time

So 3/4 garbage 1/4 lead? Kinda like a lottery ticket I guess lol. I think this coming week I'm gonna pic 200lbs up and see "winner winner chicken dinner" lol
