A "Duplex" Load Guaranteed to Win Any Bullseye Match!

I scored 32 out of a possible 20 with just a two shot group. See below:

It was a "Duplex" Load, but not what you might have thought. I make up 43 Mauser to shoot in my Mauser 71/84's out of Starline 45/90 (described elsewhere). I have a pet load with 500gr bullets, and one day I got to thinking that since that long neck gripped the full length of the 500gr bullet, why would it not grip two 250gr bullets lined up end-to-end? Fact is it does:

Just a bit of fun. The two bullets take very different trajectories, ending up 2-4 inches apart at 50 yds. I imagine this is explained by the upset caused as the two bullets start to separate as they leave the bore, plus the effect of the front bullet's shock-wave, "contrails", shielding effect, etc. One of the two bullets actually hit where aimed on both shots, so it appears that at least one bullet goes where aimed, and I have to think it was the front bullet.

I could only do this because of the long (0.800") neck of the 43 Mauser. You might be able to pull this off in the 45/70 and 458 Win Mag as well, but only if the rear bullet is firmly gripped, and that depends on the taper in the case. I chose a powder that had the rear bullet sitting on top of the powder column, which further prevented it from falling into the cartidge, and the same would be advised for other cartridges.

Back to back bullets

Started with 2 then 3 round ball loads in my 45/70 many years ago...then bought a Lee .456 ..220 grain flat base mold (made for Ruger old army BP pistol)

Loaded two of them "base to base"...over 14.8 gr. Unique...1281..1237.1229 fps...and at 50 yards they print about 1 to 1.5 inches apart..

One hole in target is from the Rnd nose and the second cuts like a wadcutter ..and is perfectly round...

If you like to xperiment..you could slip a gas check(with small pliers) into one of your molds grease grooves and form a barrel shaped wadcutter..

In my Lee 500 gr gascheck I've made 150 gr to 220 gr wadcutters depending on which of the grease grooves you insert the gascheck into.

At 25 yards 180 gascheck wadcutter with 14.8 gr Unique will cut cloverleafs..at 50 yards 3shots 1.25 inch....100 yards 4 shots 2.50 inch
10.0gr. Bullseye works just as well with these..

Useing this method each wad cutter is gaschecked...and then you can place another gas check in its usual spot on the cast bullet.....this is only if you want to put two 180 or three 150 gr wadcutters in one case and was more accurate than without .....Velocity is about 1200 fps....and all three will go through 3 inches of fir plywood at 25 yards...

...one or two wadcutters should work in your long necked .43 mauser if you have gas checks for them.....

It makes for a 630grs payload..... start low!!

I used the Lee C457-500-F #90376, sized to 0.448".

As for powder, all I've used to date is smokeless. My favourite load so far is 45.0 grs of the Marstar "Reloader's Special" pulled Swedish surplus powder (burn rate ~ IMR4320). I'm getting 1350 fps with it, with a few particles of unburnt powder left behind.

I've been using pulled milsurp powder that is fairly slow for the 43 Mauser (~IMR4320), but I might use Unique or SR4759 next time.

2 or 3 "collar button", 160 gr. bullets stacked, would be interesting in a 45/70.

You can make them yourself like I did.

Take a 500+ gr GC mold with wide enough lube grooves (I used the Lee C457-500-F) and insert a gascheck "backwards" into it and then close the mold. Pour and you're done. If you look closely, those are really Semi Wadcutters and the front is the GC part of the mold you use.

I load 2 115 SWC in 357 cases. Bottom one is upside down. At 20 yards they print about 2" apart.

Thanks for the ideas. I have not gotten into gas checks yet.. I am just casting tumble lubed plinking bullets so far.

I did make up 20 3 ball loads tonight though.
