Was at the range today shootig one of my M71/84's and tried a few loads:

Lee 310 gr C452-300_RF sized to 0.448"
OAL 2.875"

Unique - 12.0 grs - 1125 fps
SR-4759 - 28.0 grs - 1540 fps
IMR-4198 - 32.0 grs - 1475 fps (best load for me)
IMR-3031 - 42.0 grs - 1600 fps
Varget - 48.0 grs - 1540 fps

I have a bunch of "correct" Dominion and Bertram brass, but I have tried a couple of alternatives and they both work out fine:

45-70 - it's too short and undersized at the casehead, but the neck is long and the pressures low. You get a small bulge above the casehead, but five firings and no sign of separation. 45-90 is the right length, but more money.

458 Win Mag - it's the right length once cut down, and with the belt turned off, the right diameter at the casehead. The only problem is that the rim is undersized and the extractor can't grab it, so a cleaning rod is required.

I have always been fascinated by the .43 Mauser since I found a loaded round in my grandpa's stuff after he passed away.

I still have that one round :) that was 20 years ago.

How hard would it be to get a T&C contender barrel in 43 Mauser?

Andy, what about 348 brass blown out, it is still quite plentiful and with the new rifles coming out it should be here for some time to come. It has the larger rim and body dia of the 50-110, would it not be better or is it too big?

Nothing's impossible, but that's close.

348 Win is too large about the base. You need something in the 0.516" range and it's about 0.550". 45-90 is about the best fit out there.

As far as rebarreling, I'd not, the action is made for
Time period cartridges, like the black powder era
Though smokeless loads can be fired of appropriate
Pressure limits,I have 2 of the 71/84 shortened
Rifles, both ex shooters, I to have some dominion rounds and
Brass to reload, I bought dies from lee for 46$
Cast bullets from wheel weights, and use a variety of
Powders in small doses that make that big slug really move
Along, both my rifles shoot extremely well
I also have used 4570 cases, and 348
348 is a bit of a hassle as just fire forming cannot be done
Some material has to be machined off the body of the cartridge
If u try and put one in a 43 Mauser die to reform
It's not gonna work, to much material, Nd when undo get them
Formed, and loaded, after firing u will notice the primers
Back out roughly 1/16 or so, due to it being a non Mauser
Head case, after 5 firings the 348 brass I had failed
It was Winchester cases brand new in bag I used
I'd just keep the gun chambered as it is, u won't put a better
Cartridge on that action any better than 43
Just my opinion

I showed a 43 case to a gun nut, and he said "wow, look how much room there is to improve that cartridge"

I have 2 model 71/84's shortened, typical conversions
From yrs past when Canadians were buying them for moose
And bear hunting, I've had fun experimenting with pistol
And shotshell powders and have had nothing but great
Results!

Here's some loads I use

Alliant 2400 Powder, 22.5 gr, 395 gr RCBS had cast
And Dacron filler, bullet lubed with SPG,
50 yard accuracy with iron sites 2.5" 4 shots

HERCO 15gr, Dacron filled , same bullet
At 50 yards " one ragged hole!!

IMR SR4759, 29 gr, Dacron filled same bullet
100yards 3.5" group 4 shots

IMR3031, 35 gr, no filler,
Same bullet, very accurate, 3" at 100 but
Very dirty powder leaves gunk in barrel

H4895- 32.5gr, Dacron filled, same bullet
Very mild on shoulder, very accurate. 2" at 50 yards

Alliant blue dot, 16 gr, same bullet, Dacron filler
Mild plinker , could use for deer in ranges 75 yard and In
Accuracy wasn't to bad at 3" at 50 yards

Alliant Unique, 14 gr, Dacron filler , same bullet
Gd range load, or cowboy load. Accuracy 4" at 50 yards
" drops alot velocity is 1150 at muzzle ".

IMR 4198, 32.5 gr, Dacron filled, little punchy
Accuracy at 50 yards was 2.5-3".

I was using dominion casings, Winchester large rifle primers
Also CCI 250 magnums with pistol powder/ shotgun powder
Also used reformed 348 win, and 4570

Has anybody tried Black Powder in the 43 ?
Years ago Lyman made a special run of moulds and I bought one so I couldn't resist, had to try the BP and it shot very well.
It was also much easier to clean after than trying to clean a lever gun...

What happens with black and pyrodex
Is that fouling gets in throat of bore, makes loading
Shells harder, also increases pressure as it actually
Constricts the throat area, I just stick with smokeless
Less mess , more fun

Making an A-base on 45-90 brass

Yes, 45-90 works better for me than original Dominion brass (thanks Andy) which has a habit of cracking longitudinally at the case head after several firings. My reason for jumping in here is to show how the A-base can be formed on the 45-90 brass. Author LoLo25643 on another forum posted these two pictures of his little die on the net. It pushes the rim foreward to take up the head space in the bolt head. This must be the first step in converting 45-90 to 43 Mauser. No modification to the bolt head or extractor is required.
