So I'm just packing for a 12-day backpack trip where every ounce counts yet there always seems to be a couple extra things that I take along that I just can't seem to live without. What things do you take hunting that really could stay at home but do make life a bit more enjoyable despite the extra weight.

For me it's: Man Wipes (aka baby wipes), deodorant, one small package of Hawken's Cheezies, Crystal Lite, and my own tent. Likely adds up to about 5 extra pounds but worth every ounce to me.

Oh ya, and a tape measure.

Try hitting the gym for a couple months to shed some unwanted pounds and leave the beer cans home...if you can.

Your own tent for sure. I like to always pack some reading material and a headlamp.
Why don't you give us your list of stuff you are taking for a 12 day trip. Is this trip self-supported? Any way to cache?

Totally self supported.......no way to cache. Not really looking for advice on what to take as I've been doing this for more than 20years but just curious what extra things that other people take on backpack hunts to add a little comfort but they really don't need it. That case of a little extra weight being worth the pleasure. Things like clean underwear and socks are another pleasure item for me and of course my puffy camp slippers. A hiking pole is another item that I've started carrying in my old age. Definitely makes downhill with a heavy pack far more pleasurable.

I did not want to critique your list, nor offer advice. I was more interested in what you are taking for a 12 day self supported hunting trip. I have done lots of backpacking, but only for a handful of days, never 12. Just curious is all. I always curse myself when I forget nail clippers. They are handy for lots of things other that clipping nails.

Two hiking poles make downhill nicer too. They can be crossed and held with left hand for improvised shooting sticks.

Baby wipes, talcum powder, & second skin. Nothing destroys a trip quicker than a firey case of "moose ass" or a strategically located blister.

For the chafed bum and thighs from sweaty hiking ass, try a little dab of Vaseline. Very weird and slippery, but it works really well. Also good for chapped nipples from shirt rubbing.

Man I would not want to be down wind when you get home. 12 days no soap hiking up and down sweating, ouch.

Hey, at least I take some baby wipes and deodorant....most don't......but ya, you don't head straight to the bar looking to get lucky that's for sure. But truthfully, after three ot four days it really doesn't matter any more........

IMODIUM.........the still hunters best friend. Im so glad Im not the only one who packs that.

If I didnt eat for 9 days, Id still have to go the minute I get into a blind.

Then again, I drink wayyyy too much coffee. That'll betray ya in a hurry:D

If fishing is open where I'm hunting I'll bring a few trout flies and 20 yards or so of 10 pound test line. Line is also good for making snares.

Also, a bar or bottle of biodegradable soap for laundry and washing up from time to time.

Salt n' pepper.

Collapsable bucket.

Washcloth and small towel.

Roll of duct tape.

Basic first aid kit

I was kinda wondering when I saw "spoon" and then "crystal" right under it!!! Don't you take a GPS or a SAT phone with you on these remote hunts. What about water purification tabs or filters?
