...I know you're out there :D Our populations have been in the tank this year so it's been a rough go to find many birds. I've picked up a few though. Missed more than my share as well :D Post up some pics, let's see those chickens!

Nice!

870 in 410, eh? Those are nice lil shotguns! :D

Like you wouldn't believe :D I am going to get it drilled for choke tubes though. The MAJOR downside is the fixed mod choke.....spread is hugomongous....can't reach out as far as I want to.

Kudos on the nice breasts! :D I agree. I have seen next to no birds this year in the back country.

I shot this ruffy just inside the Elaho valley. He flushed about 40 yards in front of me and I shot him with 12 ga. #7 1/2 shot. When I found him he was alive and when I cleaned him I found zero shot of any kind anywhere. Including the breast. Man I love Grouse hunting.

Yah!! Good shootin :D The longer ones are best because you rarely get meat damage.

We have seen loads of grouse this year, not many at the right time though(lots seen when not bird hunting). Caught these four on the way out from sheep hunting a few weeks ago. Had some bird loads for the 270 with me...

Could have eight a few days ago but was trying to be a :ninja: so let them all go, kicked myself at the end of the day though. Tag soup never tastes good :(

I take the heads clean off with my 870 SM 12G with 2.75 1 1/8oz #6 shot

Nice... now I will have to remember to bring my camera next good day I get to take some pictures to post to this thread if I can remember ;)

EDIT: And that's with a mod choke as well.

Hahaha! What exactly is your bird load for the 270? :D Is it 150 Sierra GameKings for those ruffies? :sniper:

I prefer a 12 gauge where I hunt! ;)

9 grains of Unique pistol powder and a 130g bullet(whatever is on hand). I have noticed that these do less damage than a 22 rimfire. Try it sometime, it works and works well.

When and where I hunt, one gun is all I can carry. 8000-9000 feet elevation and a 20-30 pound pack makes taking a shotgun along not an option. When was the last time you killed a bighorn sheep or a big mountain mule deer with your 12 guage :p :D

Really? Thats interesting... but I can see how that would be.

Ah, well... no bighorn sheep or mule deer over where I am! But Usually I prefer my Katana for the sheep. I just lop the head off after I sneak up behind them. :ninja:

Yeah.

Definately want to go on a sheep hunt one day, for sure.

OK here's one more. I felt guilty shooting my 870 so much, so I took the old spanish side by side (410) out for an evening. Managed to collect one en route to the spot.

Around my neck of the woods most would sooner eat crow or seagull over fool hens :D

I never figured that out, Spruce's taste the same as Ruffies to me

Not quite but damned close. Like most stigmas attached to game meat, the bad taste of sprucies seems to be mostly fiction -- or something someones Grandpa told them that they took as gospel without ever trying for themselves.

Gotta agree with ya there

Never have eaten crow or seagull, must be yummy...

Had some company over tonight, cooked them up along with 5 ruffed grouse. Both tasted pretty much the same, all good. Those four birds were all shot at a very high elevation where usually all we see are ruffed and blue grouse.

I have had a few spruce grouse that tasted like shiat, from what I remember those were all shot at lower elevations (foothills). Not sure if it makes a difference or not .

I have tried Sprucies (about 16-17 years back) I can remember them being awful. Maybe it has to do with their diet? I have never had an awful Ruffie but some were better than others.

I have only taken one so far this year (a road grouse on my way to pick up some wood for the camp) I have been trying to connect with my bow, missed 2 so far. There is one coming to my Elderberry bush in the back yard, I'll try to stick him this evening. After that, I will hunt them with my 2 dogs and a 20 Guage O/U.

On a side note, our introduced Sharptails are almost at huntable levels and the province is considering re-introducing Spruce Grouse, now that we have woods again. (our woods were almost non-existant 100 years back.
