What are the general outlines of IPSC and IDPA? How do they differ? Either one requires a black badge course, right? Are there any clubs shooting either discipline in N.E.ON? We had two members take the black badge course, but they said they found Barrie is the closest venue. What has to be done to a range layout to make it approved for one of these disciplines?

I can help you out on a couple of your questions. IDPA does not require the shooter to have a black badge rating. The main difference between the two is that IPSC is a speed and skill sport. IDPA as a general rule is geared for concealed carry and the scoring is based heavily on proper use of cover, tactical reloads etc etc.

IDPA .......scoring is based heavily on proper use of cover, tactical reloads etc etc.

Not quite true. In IPSC, it's your score (from hits on the targets) minus any penalties then divided by time (resulting in a 'Hit Factor' or think of it as 'points per second'). Whoever ends up with the highest 'Hit Factor' wins the stage and everyone else is compared to the stage winner. The stage winner then gets 100% of the 'stage points' and everyone else gets a percentage of 'stage points' relative to the winner. Stage points are then added up to determine a match winner.

Scoring in IDPA is much simpler and is based strictly on time; ie: how fast you complete the stage. Any shots outside the two 'down zero' scoring areas on the target result in time added (0.5 secs per 'point down'). There are also procedural penalties (ie: not using cover properly - but you get a warning first) that add to your time (3 secs). 'Failure to Neutralize' and 'Hits on Non-Threat Target' penalties add 5 secs to your time. Whoever ends up with the lowest 'Time' wins!

To compare the two sports go to:

IPSC: http://www.ipsc.org/rules.htm

IDPA: http://www.idpa.com/Documents/IDPARuleBook2005.pdf

Both sports require 'speed and skill'.

For IDPA in Alberta go to: http://s3.phpbbforfree.com/forums/index.php?mforum=athl

they are the same with a few different rules. the goal is to shoot as fast as you can, accurately.

There's a club in the Sault that holds a match a month and Ive been talking with some members of the Sudbury Revolver Club about getting back into IPSC again. But as far as match shooting I have travelled to Ottawa, Cornwall and Guelph, and every bit of travelling is worth it.
