So I decide to try some hollowpoint rounds in my Glock to see if water jugs will blow up real nice and other fun things. After reading some threads I send one of the nice site sponsors an email asking about pricing on ~200 rounds of Speer Gold Dot 124's, receive a reply that they're $32/50 rounds and are in stock.

I call there the next morning, explain I'd emailed about this and would like to order 5 boxes/250 rounds of that ammunition, give my address and visa number, and after hanging up email a scan of my PAL to them. Doing some quick math I figure the total cost should be about $200 ($160 for the ammo, $30 for DHL and $10 for GST), which is not too horrible for some fun jug shooting.

So, imagine my surprise when I receive the package today and the total bill is over $345!! Apparently they're now out of the $32/50 ammo, but were more than happy to substitute and send 13 boxes of $22/20 stuff (identical ammo except for the package). Add to that a whopping $45 shipping charge, a bit more GST and I'm out almost $150 more than anticipated! That's an extra 60 cents per round.

Needless to say I'm less than thrilled about this. If I send it back for a refund I'll be out ~$75 in wasted shipping charges, and If I keep it I'll be sitting on $1.35/round ammo that I won't shoot because of the cost.

If they have any customer service interest or business ethics they at least should contact you before spending your money. Also, not to mention you never authorized the sale or monetary transaction that they completed on your behalf. I'd be contacting them to at the very least voice my displeasure. That one transaction experience may very well have cost them a possibility of future business and by the way you're filthy rich right?
Give em crapppp dude!

Sure they may have lost a repeat customer, but some places could give a fat rats ass about contacting you. They seem to think that once they have your credit card number that "the sky is the limit"........I should know as i work in a wholesale warehouse and my bosses motto is "if we dont have what they want, we'll sell them something that's kinda the same but more expensive".
If your pissed about being screwed with this ammo deal, phone them and voice a complaint. Chances are they MAY issue a credit, if not.....word of mouth my friend, word of mouth. If your NOT satisfied, care to share who screwed you over?

Contact them and ask them to sell it at the price said in the email.
If they refuse, call visa, say you never approuved that charge and keep the ammo.

That really sucks.

I just received a brand new cable crimper (retail $40) from a manufacturer because, through my negligence, I broke my 7 year old one. No questions other than what was my name and address.

They sent it courier and it arrived 2 days after I contacted them.

Free.

Talk to them nice and let us know what happens.

I think at the very least they should meet you half-way on the difference.
If they rock, they will credit you back all the difference and charge you the original cost.
If they do not rock, you are hooped (due to the shipping costs of returning the ammo which as you pointed out will screw you for $75.)

Are we not allowed to state the company name in a situation like this? I'd like to know who it was so if I ever make a purchase there, I can state in my email that I will NOT accept substitutions. Something that I might have to do anyway.

TALK TO THE COMPANY AND SEE IF THEY WILL REVERSE THE CHARGES. If nothing happens, than post the name of this company.

I want to know who it is.

The problem is that if you post the name first and ##### without talking to them first, this thread will get deleted.

If AFTER you've talked to them and they refuse to correct the situation, than you have every right to post the name of this company!

As you do, so do I but he should go thru the proper steps to rectify this problem with the company. If they tell him to pound sand.....post away so we can all know.

You did not receive what you ordered, for the price that you were quoted. If the company refuses to issue a credit for the difference in price, call Visa, and tell them exactly that, and they won't charge you.

Nothing like the joys of buying ammo through the mail. Did you ask about the shipping charges? Tell 'em a substitution was ok?
"...a whopping $45 shipping charge..." Shipping charges are based on weight, the size of the package and distance. They're not set by the retailer either. The carrier does that. Ammo is heavy stuff and 13 boxes is a bigger package than 5.
"...never approved that charge and keep the ammo..." That's called fraud.

If you didn't approve the substitution, you can call them to offer to keep the ammunition for the price that you both agreed to.If they refuse you can call Visa, cancel the charges, and return the ammunition COD.If they think that you are serious, they will drop the price to the agreed amount to avoid paying the two way shipping, without making a sale.

Thanks for the input everyone. I posted just to make sure that I wasn't way off base in what I expected from them, and now I'm pretty sure that I need to be a bit less nice/accommodating. I don't want to post the company just yet, as I'll give them one more chance to make good.

Sunray, I didn't ask about shipping as I assumed I'd be charged roughly what the actual costs were. Using DHL's online calculator and the dimensions/weights from the shipping label the charge would be $26.66. Caveat emptor definitely applies alright, and if nothing else I've learned a lot about what to (and what not to) do the next time I do any more email/phone ordering.

As an aside, I also received 4 boxes from Wholesale Sports mail order today, which included 200rds .223, 500rds 9mm, 1000rds .22, 50rds buckshot and two plastic utility boxes and the total shipping charge was $62. I also received a case (1k rds) of .223 ammo from a different CGN sponsor in the mail!! But that's a discussion for another day.

Just for entertainment here is the email trail with some names/places censored/changed/removed...

If you want to bring it back when you are in [censored] next time and the condition is the same - bring your invoice and we will refund the price of the ammo only to you.

I really wish I had been informed of this before it was shipped, as I really didn't expect to pay over $275 for $160 of ammunition and wouldn't have ordered it if I'd know how much more it would be.

If there's no other option then I guess I'll return this for a refund the next time I'm in [censored].

Sorry Harv, ignore the last email (note: this refers to a blank email that was sent). The 20 round boxes were sent to you because we had run out of the ammo in 50 round boxes. The ammunition is exactly the same. I wish I had more. We have been cleaned out of the 50 round boxes. I don't know what more I can do for you right now. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Thanks very much for your time.

Hi,

I just received my order, but it has 20 round boxes for $22 each in it. Would it be possible to exchange these for the $32/50rd boxes, as they seem to be quite a bit less expensive.

Thanks,

Harv

Hello,

I was wondering if you had any 9mm Speer Gold Dot 124 available, and if so at what price? I'd probably be looking for 100-200 rounds.

Thanks!
