well, well, well a free lunch just came by! One of my dogs was laying on the deck having a peaceful nap, there was one big thud, we all heard it here in the house, a grouse flew into the full length glass door, bounced back and landed beside the dog, he got spooked and couldn't believe what just happened!
I did read somewhere why birds fly into windows, but I can't remember the reason and the best ways to prevent this from happening. First time here for a grouse, but many other birds have done it before. Anyone know how to prevent this?

String some black sewing thread across the windows up/down, side to side etc. to look almost web-like. Birds can see the thread and avoid flying into the glass. First time I ever saw it was at a friends place. He lived out of town in a mixed field/bush area. I asked what it was about and he explained how it prevented birds from flying into his windows. He also had black coloured silohouettes of Kestrels or Sparrow Hawks taped to the window corners. He said the little birds avoided the bird killers like the plague. He said he hadn't had a bird hit a window in years and was glad because he said he was tired of replacing picture windows when a grouse would fly into them often breaking them.

We tape flagging tape to our windows so it flaps in the wind. Not as attractive as the black thread which we might give a try.

Place a lit BBQ under each window?

My parents hang old CDs on string at various heights (inside) at their house and they say it works.

It's usually because they are very sick with often serious diseases. Looks tasty tho.

LOL I kid.

darn you, lol! I'm glad I didn't read your post until after the bird was bbq'd and eaten! It was tasty, prolly wouldn't have been while having "sick & diseases" on my mind!

Was this suppose to be a tongue in cheek joke asking how to prevent getting a free, tasty lunch.

Fixed it for you.

I have always used this as an excuse NOT to clean the windows.....

The cleaner they are (the windows) the more they reflect the sky's image, which birds can confuse with "open air".

If the windows are dirty, birds don't fly into them...... As often....

My $0.02

Ahhhh Lazy Man Reasoning. I shall use that next time the wife asks me to wash the windows...

There was a scientific article about a year ago that listed the primary causes of human-related bird deaths.. pet & feral cats were #1, but collisions with glass / widows was high up there - accounting for millions of dead birds every year. I live in a wooded area and when we put an addition on the house- with nice new windows - I noticed several birds getting killed or stunned.. including one of the resident grouse. I stapled a few strips of flagging tape on the outside of the windows and haven't had any bird deaths since.

Migration is the worst time for this. May and August/September in my area, but maybe different farther south.

Same thing happened to my brother at his cottage years ago. Thump against the window...roast grouse for dinner. My college was on a wooded ravine and they put black silhouettes of falcons or some raptor on the windows. I'm not sure how effective it was.
