A Glock conundrum.

So I have a Glock 22 gen3 with around 1500 through it. I recently took a gen 4 on trade with 400 through it.

Ultimately I'd like a Glock 17 so I can shoot in 9mm. I have to decide whether gen 3 or 4 and do I want to stay in .40 or drop to 9mm.

Basically im mulling over keeping two Glock 22s or 1 glock 22 and a glock 17. Or something else. I know the debate between gen 3 vs 4 comes down to ergo sand the only potential issues are recoil springs and extractors in gen 4.

I've yet to take the gen 4 to the range but I definitely like the feeling of the mag seating, the rtf2 texture and over size mag release.

Opinions?

take both gen's to the range and see how you like them, then figure which one you shoot better with and buy the same gen 17 :)

I had a 22 with a conversion, the Ejector shoots brass onto your forehead because the 9mm is smaller.

9 is cheaper and nicer to shoot anyways, I always shot 9 and almost never 40 so id just go 17, but if buying new the 17c for sure.

I bought a Gen4 17, but most of the range Glocks at my range are Gen 3. And honestly I dont see a big advantage over the gen3, I dont use the back straps so that feature is useless and also I am right handed so the abmi mag release is also no use to me. All the recoil spring kits I bought convert from gen4 to gen3 rod and springs, so again useless. I dont think I will be buying any more Gen4, they cost more and have nothing better on them that I will actually use.

The bigger mag release is nice, but I swapped them all out for aftermarket ones anyways so again no benefit there

The only real benefit of Gen4 IMO for me is the Gen4 comes with 3 mags and Gen3 only come with 2

I am buying a G21 tomorrow and I am going gen3 for these reasons, the money I save going Gen3 will pay for a spare mag

Keep the G22Gen4 and get a 40-9 conversion barrel and a guide rod with a 13 pound recoil spring. Voila... You now have a .40 and a 9mm!!!! You don't even need Glock 17 mags... You can use your .40 mags and fit three bonus rounds in when using 9mm!

I prefer the Gen 4's, but it's all about personal preference. Decide what one you like, sell the one you don't, and buy the 17 in the Gen of your choice.

I see a lot of confusion about the backstraps in Glocks. This is a very important feature.
A Gen 4 with no backstrap is not the same size a gen3, a gen4 with no back strap is SMALLER by 2mm over the Gen3 grip.
A gen4 with MEDIUM backstrap (which is the smallest of the 3 backstraps you get) brings the GEN4 to the size of the Gen3.

So, if you have smaller hands, go with the gen4. If you have not tried one, please do, it does not seems like a lot but it is. I run my Gen4 with a backstrap (medium) so for me the Gen3 works perfectly, but for some people don't.

This is the reason why the trigger group housing is different in GEN4 but the same in Gen1-2-3, because the grip has been reduced and a new housing had to be created (smaller) to allow for this. In other words, the gen3 housing is too big.

Cheers.

I always wondered why my Gen 4 G20 felt so much better (to me) than my friend's Gen 3 G20. Now I know.
Thanks for the explanation.

Hey no prob. My pleasure.
It is actually a very common mistake. Most people think it is the same but it is not.
Cheers

Get a conversion barrel. Best of both worlds.

This is the way I'd go if you don't want to actually keep both pistols.

NAA.

I'd kind of like to shy away from the conversion barrel. To me I'm just not sold on the mixed wolf reviews. I've also read that each glock is built for its caliber and that glock constantly tells people not to do conversions. (Whether true or not). I seriously wonder if a g22 is more reinforced than the g17.

I can't get to the truth that "all these police agencies are dropping back to 9mm for wear and tear."

I have experience with both G22 and G17. Both Gen3 and Gen4. I really don't see Gen4 as any upgrade over the older pistols, at least in my hands (average size) and on the range. Glock was kinda forced to do something and did just that...something. I don't mind either generation, but for G17 I would certainly go with Gen3. G22...probably newer model, but not by much. Again, I really can't see much difference there and .40 is much easier to buy than anything 9mm - at least here.
