A good British SxS - where to buy?

I definitely wasn't thinking of Marstar- Purdeys and Churchills are not their thing. Also, they don't welcome visitors.

Neither did Tradeex. You could make an appointment to see some specific guns but you didn't just walk in. And their foray into English guns was relatively brief....just a couple years before the shut down.

SC Gunworks near Barrie ?
- Not sure if he sells stuff, but he probably knows people who do

Stelios will move stuff that his clients ask him to, at times. Often estates. Two of my favorite guns, my Lovena sidelock and my J & W Tolley single shot I bought from Stel. They were part of an estate that also had a big vintage double rifle that Claudio O picked up and restored. I forget what it was but it was beautiful. But I think that's more the exception than the rule with Stel.

Precision Arms (Stephen Milton) North of Toronto... never bought anything from him, but he often has interesting stuff on his website

Last time I knew of a Purdey that Steve had, it was a freaking disaster and his proposed “restoration” wasn’t going to bring it back to what a Purdey should be. A friend was obsessed with it……I pointed him in a different direction and he is extremely pleased with the Purdey he did buy. We were out woodcock hunting last October and were using our “brace” of Purdeys. Was a good day.

If you want to see a wide selection of good British doubles in one place I would suggest 2 options. First is the Calgary Easter gun show as suggested by Cow Town Bill. The second suggestion would be the Double Gun Classic held on a Weekend around early June at the Oshawa Gun Club the past few years and advertised on this forum although I have not seen a date yet for this year.

Thankyou :)

Frederick Beesley was an important inventor and in fact the signature Purdey assisted opening best gun of the last 130+ years was actually a Beasley invention. His own branded guns were very well made, the best were the equal of the Purdey of the period.

Indeed, I am very interested in him and his makes… :)

Thanks for the plug, Ol' Flinter. We are just starting to ramp up for the 2023 Double Gun Classic and we are hoping to hold it on June 10, 2023. More info to following over the next few weeks.

For those who don't know, the Double Gun Classic is an event designed to celebrate double guns with a bit (but not exclusive) focus on vintage SxS. We have held it at the Oshawa Clay and Target Club. The Classic started in 2015 and has been held every year since then, with the exception of a two year break due to club closure re: Covid. The event is more like a automobile show and shine than a competitive shoot. Although we usually have a skeet field reserved that is active pretty much the whole time. Everyone who can brings as many of their guns as they can and we end up with quite a display of fine and interesting shotguns. Many are shared so it might be a chance to take a couple of shots with a gun that interests you. While there are many high quality and high dollar guns that show up, there are many others, just as interesting that definitely fall into the "affordable" range. We also usually have one or two of Canada's best SxS gunsmiths attending and there is always much to learn from them. Finally there is an informal buy and sell going on.....some guns and other accessories like cases. I will be starting a new thread dedicated to the 2023 event in a few weeks. All are welcome to attend.

I needed a bounty to wipe the drool off my keyboard.

Jokes apart, thankyou for the update and I am looking forward to this event.

 Looking forward to another year !

And re that Beesley it looks like someone just pulled the trigger on it.
I shouldered that gun at Epps once a few years back, it lined-up nicely and hopefully makes a good shooter
Somebody mentioned to me once that the Army and Navy they have is worth a hard look
