Hey all,

I'm just getting into reloading and have been doing well with the .223, but want to start with the 30/06.

I'm just wondering what everyone's preferences are for bullet styles for hunting and plinking loads.

Thanks.

30-06 is extremely versatile, you can use nearly any bullet you can imagine. I developped loads for 100(plinking), 110(2), 150(2), 165, 180, 190 and 220 grain bullets. All but 100 grain group 5 shots under 1 MOA. So, choose the bullet you like - almost for sure you will find a proper load for it.

I agree this is an extremely versatile caliber. I shot a lot of different combo in mine form cheap winchester power point to Sirrocco and bottom line is everything was shooting good enough for hunting.

For reload, lately i used some sierra game king in 165 and Hornady SST in 165 as well. Very similar grouping, extremely happy with both, less than 1 MOA at 200 yds in my old Parker Hale. I been using SST for the last 4 years now and love the results, in deer moose and bear.

For powder I got some H380. Produce acceptable velocity, not quite H4350 but good enough. For grainage it's always debatable cause my recipe might not perform in your gun.

Anyway here's my recipe:

Winchester Brass
CCI Large rifle Primer
Hornady SST 165gr
H380 53.5gr.

Good luck.

Most commercial .30 cal bullets have been developed using the .30-06 as a baseline,so there are no end of good choices.

For hunting,I've gotten good results with all of Sierra,Nosler and Hornady 150-180gr bullets. For target shooting, pick any Match grade bullet by the same companies.

Many propellants work well for reloading. I'd go with IMR 4064 in 150-168gr with IMR 4350/H4831/W760 in 180gr. Here's an accuracy and money saving tip. When reloading 150-165gr,both IMR 4064 and 4350 work well, but the accuracy nod goes to 4064 with 6-7gr less to develop the same velocities. For plinking try some SR4759 for reduced loads with your favourite 150gr bullet-negligible recoil and excellent accuracy.

Thanks for the leads folks, I'll have to stop into the shop this week and see what they have for selection.

I've been running Winchester silvertips in 180 gr, and I had a bunch of odds and ends that I purchased on here for plinking, but the local Canadian Tire sells 30/06 for around 27 bucks a box and I've discovered that reloading is much more satisfying than showing a 12 year old my RPAL to be allowed access to the glass case.

Thanks all.

Thanks all.

Those silvertips go for $34 here at CT

After 23yrs or so of hunting, I have tried all kinds of different commercial ammunition, and nothing has come close to the Sierra SBT's and IMR 4064 combination I am now using. I wish I would have started reloading years ago.
