Hey, I'm going up to the cottage, this weekend, and want a cheap nitro piston rifle because of the deacrease in noise over a spring rifle. Im just looking to do some plinking with friends who I don't think will want to use a .22 because of the noise, and the fact that a air gun is a bit friendlier to my non shooting friends. Anyway I would like some suggestions on a reasonably cheap accurate hopefully comes with a scope nitro piston break barrel. This might be the only time it gets used, so I'm not looking to spent to much.
Thanks.

There was one on the EE with a trigger upgrade for $250.
They are not a whole lot quieter then a spring gun.

That'd my Benji Titan NP you are talking about, hah. I find it quite a bit quieter than my springer of comparable power, if just because it has no springs to resonate.

Still for sale for $250, but I doubt I could get it to Toronto by the weekend.

Depends on the springer I guess, a tuned spring gun is not much louder then a piston gun. It might seem louder when you are shooting it with your ear beside the spring chamber but from 20 feet away I don't think there is much difference.

Thanks for the info. It looks like the benjiman trail np is well recommended. I was leaning that way at first before I placed this post, I just needed some reassurance, I had no idea if they made an ok air rifle. I knew they made cheap air rifles in the crossman line for sure I have two of them. LeBaron has them on sale right now for $254.00, I think that will do me fine.
Thanks for the help.

The stock trigger is pretty lame, and the pistol grip style stock is very comfortable.
I'd go with the EE if you can wait a few days.....
Some people have experienced variances in velocity with the nitro pistons, they may need a break in period but should be great for plinking.

I have the XL NP that I use for a cottage plinker. It has the CharlieDaTuna GRT-III trigger upgrade which is far better than the stock trigger. Quiet but I find it quite awkward to handle and shoot because of its length and balance. Can't seem to get used to the recoil from the nitro piston - just find it weird?

Think I'm going to try out a Walther LGV for my next airgun.

Buy a Phantom 500 from walmart and google how to shorten the piston to the higher Phantom 1000 http://www.airgunhome.com/agforum/viewtopic.php?t=491 or order one from crosman. I have a number of air rifles including a Trail np. Its nice but for one use at the cottage or plinking at the cottage, buy a cheap springer. I liked my phantom and after shimming and resizing the piston it shot good for $100 rifle. The Quest is the same rifle with a wood stock and just as nice. if you want a quiet rifle then you should get a co2 rifle like this http://www.dlairgun.com/Air-Rifles/Crosman/048_1077.html or this for s & giggles http://www.dlairgun.com/Air-Rifles/Crosman/053_MTR77NP.html

I ended up getting the trail all weather, I'll let everyone know how it works out, but it looks like a good solid rifle just holding it.

I have the Benji Trail NP XL in 22 cal, Trail NP in 22 cal and Crosman Venom Dusk in 22. They all shoot pretty accurately but the XL is good for sub 1 inch groups and 36 yards. If you are handy, there are easy fixes for the awful trigger and always use the artillery hold. Google is your best friend for mods and artillery hold tips. Good luck.

X2, I've had a few, last 1 was $89 on sale! You can wrap the spring with plastic cut from a 2L pop bottle to tighten the chamber gap where the spring rides and smooth it out! to bump up the speed, depends on the piston that comes in it.. some can just have the hole plugged (if it came witht the short piston with a hole) but some need to have it cut down and 're-slotted' as Maevin stated, and shim it with a couple pennies or washers.

...DAMN easy pellet gun to take apart! should get 650fps out of it with good heavy pellets too!

I picked up two Stoeger X5s for my son and I. So far I'm not overly impressed. Awful trigger and accuracy is speratic. Less than 250 pellets through his and only a handful through mine, but I must say I am kind of disappointed so far.

I got a cheap springer for $100NIB, Crossman Vantage, trigger is heavy but no worse then an SKS lol.
975fps with 7.9gr, 950 with 8.2gr over the chrony and it's pretty consistent.
Not target grade but it will group under an inch at 25m with cheap CPHP. Takes squirrels out easy, not loud at all.
I see no reason for a nitro which won't run as fast until you get into the $300 range.
