I've been thinking about getting a semi-automatic .22 that looks like an assault rifle. I've looked at the scar mk22, and the Remington 597 and ruger 10/22 with archangel stocks. I'd want it to be unrestricted, too. What do you guys think would be a good choice as far as price goes?

597 is the cheapest and arguably the more accurate rifle, but the look is strange to me and the takedown is a #####.
10/22 is pretty damn reliable, and looks great. A million parts and accessories available so no worries about issues.
Scar is still not available as far as I know, unless something changed they are only available for pre order.
From all the reviews I read I would go with the scar, as it seems to be pretty decent. No idea how warranty work would go though if it is a failure.

I'm not a huge fan of the idea of buying a rifle with a stock and then replacing it with a different stock right away though. On the other hand, my hopes aren't high that the scar mk22 will be unrestricted. You said the 597 is one of the most accurate rifles (in .22 caliber im assuming lol). does it really compare to something bolt action like a savage mkii or is it just the most accurate semi-automatic?

Most accurate semi, bolts are supremely more accurate then semi's.
I am guessing this is your first firearm? If I were you I would start with a bolt action, you can get a nice marlin bolt for just over 200 bucks. Once the novelty of blasting away in semi wears off you will want to get into accuracy.
If you want to spend just a little more for a lot more quality get a CZ 452,
a bit over 400 but it's a real beauty and shoots like a dream stock. (you may need a trigger kit, just a lighter spring so the trigger is easier to pull and breaks nice and clean)
If you heart is set on a black semi they do indeed look pretty cool, and i am looking into one myself, but just maybe not the best idea for your first.
Actually I already have rifle, a Remington 552 Speedmaster. I'm looking at getting something bolt action, but it's hell as a lefty. I'm definitely going to buy an AR one day and I was just thinking it would be smart to get used to the feel of one while using cheap ammo before I actually get it.
Me and my step brother went out with my step dad. We set up cans at 100. My step brother had a Savage MkII F and I had my Marlin 795 semi. When I hit twice as many as he did my step dad tried to say it was that mine was more accurate.
For a minor investment I really enjoy my Mossberg 22 Tactical thing, it's cool, shoots pretty good (it's a plinkster in AR clothing). Got a few hundy threw it with no issues.
No big mags available and no where near the aftermarket stuff the others have, actually I don't think there is a single aftermarket part for it.
Works for me, might be on option for you.

There is no such thing as an "assault rifle".Any rifle one assaults someone with becomes an "assault rifle".If one attacks someone with a fork ,that fork becomes an "assault weapon".

thanks for the correction. What would be the proper thing to call something from the ar15/ar10/scar/m16/g36/etc family?
I have an SR22. Lots of fun for a "toy". It is fine as "yet another gun" but it would not be my first or only 22. On the positive side, it's very (10/22) reliable and well built. Accuracy is not quite like my 10/22.

I always thought an assault rifle was full auto and a battle rifle was semi.

I hate to burst your bubble, but there are such things as "assault rifles". They are rifles that use an intermediate cartridge and capable of full-auto or burst firing.
