a good gps

I'm interested in buying a gps unit. I was wonderin what some of you guys use and may recommend. I'm leaning right now towards a magellan explorist 300 or a sportrak pro. Any info is appreciated. Thanks.
 
I recently bought the garmin legend. Works well enough for what I need. Would have been nice to get the Vista but its also worth a lot more money. I mainly use it for hunting and marking my truck so I can find it after many hours of tracking deer. Just press goto truck and follow the arrow. Here's a tip "carry spare batteries". I wish the garmin would hold a signal better in the trees.

I got the Explorist 100 which is like the cheapest one I could find. It doesn't have maps or anything special but I didn't want a gps for that. I just needed it to mark way points. I have used it a bit since I bought it. Works great. Connects, battery lasts longer then it says and I don't see any problems with it so far
 
As Ted mentioned the 12 and 12 xl are great, there are 14 channel jobs out there now, but with the error code removed now, a 12 channel works fine.
There are other options out there now that would have been great during the signal mess up days, but today any 12 channel works great. Garmin and Magellan work great.
Also a mighty mouse 2 is an excellent antenna for those units that accept external antennas. The DB signal is boosted .
The benefits of a Gps are tops for outdoor folks that just wanna go , and check where the heck they are later;)
OziExplorer is a great maping program that works with most if not all units.
Sure wish Canada would get off the pot and allow folks to use the info available to make excellent topos on CD. There are some, but not all areas are covered. The US has 1;24 thou on CD. the entire state for very little money. Here your lucky to get a map scanned and put on CD for the same money. Its aweful how far behind in this department. Oh well at least we get to use Google earth.:rolleyes:

Explorist 300 here.
Works good, no problems so far.
The Rhino with the radio might be a good choice.

The explorist : 14 ch, magnetic compass (look for that - you don't want a compass that's accurate only when you move), basic maps of NA highways, sturdy, waterproof, nice color, cheap.

Don't like not having a mapping cap. But for that be ready to shed some more dough.

If you hunt with the same group and you all are looking for a GPS then the Rhino should be on your list to look at. Comes with a radio and can you send each other your position so it shows up on your GPS. A friend of mine and his dad each have the Rhino and like it a lot.

I agree completely. My hunting buddy and I have Rino 120s and they work out good for the kind of hunting that we do. Some people complain about the range of the two way radio, but it's good for 3 kilometers or so, which is pleny for what I use it for.
 
I used a Garmin II+ for years, I worker in forestry so it got a lot of use, always worked good. Now I'm going to buy an e-trex legend for my own personal use, it looks like it has all the features I want and a lot more memory then the older garmins.

Could you please tell me where you got the topo maps and how much they cost? I don't want them for the GPS itself, but I have a GPS Utility program that I would like to put the topo maps into and co-ordinate our GPS waypoints with the topo maps. Be able to print them out that way. Thanks.
 
I have a Garmin GPSmap 60C loaded with Topo Canada maps.It's a great unit and has excellent battery life.The color screen is super.The prices are starting to come down now as the new models are coming out.
