A good mat

I went with a tan VISM shooting mat/gun case. It's probably a copy of some brand name mat, but it seems to be built well. I like the double-duty aspect of it. Can be had from Amazon.ca for around $90 or so. Also comes in black and I've seen digital camo on US Amazon.
Review here:

That's pretty much carbon copy to the condor. Great mat for the buck

I'm another supporter of the tri-fold mats from Paul Bawden. He's making some mods to the base design due to shooter requests - I asked him for a tri-fold with a fourth half size panel to rest my bipod on, and took off the neoprene (the black surface was nice in the spring, but not so nice in the summer - as a bipod shooter, the non-slip surface is not important). I like that the trifold folds flat for storage, and with the two handles on the side you can carry a lot of stuff off the line with your mat. Plus Paul supports the shooting competitions.

The dual purpose cases are nice, but I found that there's always something uncomfortable - a pocket, zipper, buckle, etc. - under you. Your shooting position is never completely the same each time.

This is true, and for the one I refer to, the shoulder straps are right under you. For this reason, I removed them (not used anyway, I also use a backpack). After that is off, there isn't anything under me but the padding in the center section.

I have the rubber yoga mat - It was a waste of time as the foam rubber tears when used outdoors.
I also have the NCSTAR mat/ riflecase which is okay but you do have the "lump" problems - re RElic38 & Scout comments.

I got a Creedmoor roll up mat and love it. Perfect amt of padding, perfect size for tall shooters, very well made - they are made to order so they take a few weeks before they ship.

Don't mean to dis Centerthegroup, however I've called and talk to Paul and sent numerous emails on ordering. He's swamped with Jacket orders and can't get to anything else. Which sucks. Just saying he may not get to you in a timely fashion.

And sooner or later, (usually sooner) all the crap (rocks, twigs, sticks, grass, ants) that the dual purpose case was folded out onto usually ends up folded back inside with the rifle for the trip to the next firing point or home.

I just got one put in the mail from centerthegroup. It wasn't his standard mat it was one like scout mentioned in his earlier post.

As a newbie I went with the recommendations on this thread for a Paul Bawden trifold mat. I am glad I did. Great service, emailed him one afternoon with a question and he responded quickly. Sent him payment and received the carefully packaged mat 5 days later. I am impressed with the mat and service provided and looking forward to using it.

Here we go, this is the Condor sniper shooters mat.

Had it out for about 7 months now, used and abused it with tons of back country hiking and shooting, and I am very happy with it. If I had to purchase another mat, I would purchase it again.

This mat/case combo does not have as much storage built in as some other mats, but that is why I like it... with the other mat's you are either lying down on something, or you have to unclip things before you can get down. With the Condor, you open it, unfold it, and start shooting.

It has 3 zippered pouches up front, one of which is clear plastic for a dope sheet or range card. No problems with any of those parts, still going strong. Both of these zippered areas are attached on buttons for either easy removal, or storage of something bigger like a rear bag underneath them. It also has a built in elastic ammo pouch on the right side panel.

Overall I would rate this bag at a solid 9.5/10. It is well built, well thought out, and a sturdy, comfortable shooting mat, that will protect your expensive long range rig from bumps and knocks.

Sounds like a good mat. Question: what would you say would be the longest rifle you could fit in it?

Thanks!

cabellas shooting matt...amazing...79 dollars....cheap price, large and comfortable and good quality. waterproof and rugged as hell. Was very good in the snow, insulated me quite good. Only problem i had with it was the black rubber padding, as strong as it is, heats up in the sun if you are not lying on it. what i do is i simply fold it over in half when not shooting. It even has holes to peg it in place so it does not fly away with strong winds. Zip up pockets for your tools/brass/ammo on the side. One good thing about it is how wide it is... you can squeeze in a spotter if you dont mind close company...
