a good moose gun?

if you are a good shot I'd go with the 6.5x55, the Moose is not going to notice 100 or so feet per second diff'.:D

Yes Scandinavian Moose are about the size of our Elk...still a large animal.

Just what ever you do don't ever shoot anything with a .308 Win exspecially with a 180 grain bullet, the elk will see it coming and just step into the bullet and grin! Then just walk away saying under his breath (Glad that wasn't a 300 win mag)!

Yeah. I blame the media.

Ever since the matrix came out moose have been dodging bullets left and right, then often attempt a flying kick to the head. Goddam ninja moose - they just piss me right off.

A 300 winmag is therefore minimum now - preferably belt fed. :)

The 30-06 is fine with a quality bullet and shot placement. Heck, I would use my 257 Weatherby on them, with the right bullet and a good shot placement, but a larger caliber is preferable.

I would just use the 30-06 focusing on a premium bullet. Check into the new Winchester XP3 bullet. I have read really good things on it and they claim it will expand quickly and penatrate deeply. Supposed to be good for both Deer, Elk and Moose.

I have a 270 WSM that I use on deer, but even then I usually load toward the bottom of the scale, closer to standard 270 velocity. If I was using it on Elk or Moose, I would load towards the top end with a premium bullet.

I just think too many people focus way too much on another caliber instead of focusing on a proper bullet choice for the caliber they already have that will do the job.

Ahh yes - like the new barnes offering but with lead instead of bismuth. So stuffed with all the bullet tech from the last 10 years that I'm surprised they didn't try to make it play mp3's too :)

They're interesting - but just as a benchmark i've flattened a moose in it's tracks with a 'regular' barnes tripleshock at 250 yards using imr 4350 (57 grains). It would have done the job just as well at 300 and 350 i'm sure - beyond the range i'd normally shoot to, and i'm sure the moose would have died at 400, if somewhat less dramatically. A good bullet is key.

use a premium bullet in the 6.5 or up, place it well and you should be fine. use premiums bullets especially if you are using a speedy caliber .My last moose was taken with a 375 ultra with a 270gr X @just over 3000,shot him at only 150yds wasn't very much meat damage.

Just a small addendum: A good bullet, "properly placed" is the key! :) ;) :D Regards, Eagleye.
