"A Rifleman Went To War" by W.H. McBride, ISBN 0-93856-01-3, published by Lancer Militaria and available at www.amazon.com

Written in 1935 by an American who left the U.S. Reserves to join the Canadian Army in 1915 so he could be involved in the war.

A bit on the firearms used, but much more on "life in the trenches", tactics, etc. A must read for students of Canadian military history, tactics in general, and for anyone fancying themselves a "Rifleman".

P.S. I was amused to find him using the term "S.O.L." - seems it's been around a while :)

His other book, "With the Emma Gees" is also worth reading.
McBride wasn't a young man when he left the US, where he had been an officer in the National Guard, to enlist as a private in Canada. In his books, he recounts his experiences serving in a MG unit - Colt/Browning "potato diggers" and sniping with a Mk.III Ross with Warner & Swazey sight. His sniping accounts are very matter of fact, and quite chilling.

That book has been on my to read list ever since I saw an interveiw with the
officer responsible for the Veitnam era US sniper program say that was the book they based the program on.
