Hello Everyone on CGN!

I am looking to build a list of tactical use/range shooting shotguns for a prospective buy in the near future. I have a few requirements and if everyone could pitch in, give me thier opinions and battle for number 1 position, it is much appreciated!

The requirements are this:
Slide(Pump) action
Shortest Barrel Length Possible. 18" is acceptable, 12" pref.
Over all length to not exceed 30" (26" pref)

I AM willing to go with a stock gun and change out it's parts if neccessary, but would much prefer to buy it stock. I am looking for a ghost ring/front illuminator set.

Oh, one final requirement: REASONABLE PRICE compared to RELIABILITY AND USEFULNESS(Interchangeability/Repair/Replacement)

Thanks!

what is a reasonable price? I think Can-down is right if your on a budget. If I were to go for an 870 and couldn't afford a wingmaster or police mag i would buy one of those.

But if you can afford a little more, ive seen the fabarm for anywhere from 775-950

under 30" for even a 12.5" 870 is not going to happen unless you go to a folding stock, and then you need to go to a longer barrel length.
this is a 12.5" 870, and its OAL is 31" with a short LOP stock (add up to 2" for a full length stock):

same goes for this one:

this would be a pretty neat solution:

its my mockup of an 8.5" Grizzly with a Hogue short LOP stock. it would be just over 26" (minimum OAL) - more compact than most folders and PG guns.

manbearpig, that length would be acceptable, 32-33 tops or so. Both of the above top pictures would suffice. How much are Rem. 870 Police? Over all length? What is the one on the top? I like the grizzly mockup, how would I go about aquiring one like that?

the Grizzly was $300 brand new from CanAm (site sponsor), i sold the synthetic stock and put a wood stock on it i bought in the EE. broke even at $300.

since one of your criteria is:
REASONABLE PRICE compared to RELIABILITY AND USEFULNESS
the 870P is not really worth it -- is it better? unquestionably. but in that configuration it is over 3x the cost of the Grizzly and its not 3x the gun.

i would keep an eye on the EE for a 12.5" Grizzly or 14" Norinco HP9-1, or wait till CanAm gets more in. the mockup is based on CanAm's 8.5" Grizzly, which AFAIK CanAm is getting in sometime this year -- ask him.

if you are impatient another alternative is to pick up one of the 18.5" 870 Express guns (LeBarons has it for $350 with club card+tax), sell the 18" barrel (~$150) and +2 mag extension/clamp ($45?) on the EE. then buy a 12.5" Dlask barrel for $300 and happy cap for $10.
