a good turkey gun?

i'd be intrested in a thumb hole stock pump action in a 12G ,fairly short barrel. what is out there and what to get?what's most bang for the buck

Well if it's going to be a dedicated turkey gun then the bag limit is 2 per year and one per day. I've yet to hear of anyone taking a follow up shot on a turkey so basically any shotgun with removable chokes will do.

Pretty much this, I've never had a problem using "normal" shotguns. Didn't need any Realtree'd, fiber-optic-sighted, super-choked wondergun to kill my gobbler. But if you're looking for a dedicated gobbler gun, I'd probably start with one of those. I like the feel of the Mossberg 500 Tactical Turkey, the adjustable tactical stock is perfect for some of the odd positioning you may be forced to deal with when sitting up against a tree shooting face-on.

Shorter and lighter to what? What do you already have to compare this to. Go to a store pick things up and try them!

Mossy would be my pick. Since it'll only be used a few times a year, I can live with a mossberg. They offer short, shorter and shortest barrel length. They also come in a few stock config for your liking. God knows they are cheap.

As for the comments about using a normal gun...you CAN shoot with any gun you want, but then you aren't a real nut unless you are heavy on the excess!!

I have to agree I took both of last years birds with a 870 Norinco knock off with 3" number 5
One at 15 yrds and one at 55 yrds!
You would have thought I was shooting a Benelli!

A regular Rem 870 or Mossberg 500 with a 26 or 28" barrel will be more useful to you, than a thumbhole stock and a short barrel. Turkey models aren't overly useful for waterfowl or shotgun sports...

I've never wished for a barrel shorter than 28" yet...

I shoot my waterfowl SX3 28" for turkey, and I have shorter guns as well. 5" really doesn't bother me so going to a shorter barrel makes no sense if you already have another gun to shoot.

Just practice walking in bush with it and I am sure you will learn how to hold it best.
