I just bought a Marlin 1894CL in 32-20 and I'm trying to find a decent modestly priced low powered variable to aid my aging eyes. It has to be small in size to match the the rifle and to allow the proper fitment that I like while still allow me to keep the irons. The lack of an objective bell gives me a lot of mounting height options . I've never really paid a lot of attention to this class of scope before and I'd appreciate some advice particularly in regards to Leupolds

I have a 1.5x Japan made Hakko pistol scope on my Marlin 35 Rem rifle scout style that I used last spring to "harvest" large black bear with one shot at somewhat less than 175 m. No problem to aim accurately with low power scope even at greater distances....
I had a Burris 2.75x and Leupold 2.5x before and found out that FOV was not big enough.
The same with my bino's....my 7x35mm Nikon with FOV (9.3deg) 500'+ at 1000yds means more to me than extra power.
Reg scopes great for your needs are old low power Redfields 1-4x, Weaver 1-3x, Scopechiefs 1,5-4x and Nikon Monarch 1.5-4.5x.

I know that the Leupys are decent actually I've got a VX1 rimfire scope on the rifle now . Its a 2-7x28 and the small objective bell sits right where the rear sight elevator goes. I'm using a Weaver #63B base with old style Weaver lows at the moment. I'm switching over to a Warne #A997M 1 pc base with Burris Zee mediums so the scope will be sitting even lower than the current setup. That's why I'm searching out a scope with no objective bell

Here's a pic of my current setup. It's almost identical to Kamlooky's except I believe he has the longer and less common Weaver #63a one pc base vs my #63b. I've placed the scope laterally in the rings exactly where I want it and as a result the objective bell interferes with the sight elevator when the buckhorn rear is flipped up and in place. My new setup will be .060" lower and that is why I've decided to go with a scope that has no objective bell at all. This is Leupolds VX1 2-7 rimfire with a parallax setting for 60yds . If I could retain the irons without going to higher rings I'd use this scope in a heartbeat, it really is that good.

Here's a pic of the current set up. Same scope and low Weavers but mounted on a Warne #A997M base. It measures .225 in height vs the .430 height of the Weaver #63B. I believe that's about as low a mounting option as is available. Now this is where a scope with no objective bell(straight tube) would really shine because I could reinstall the elevator and flip up the semi-buckhorn
