How's this for a "classic" target rifle and scope?

A custom built 22-250 on a German military 98 action with an Unertl scope. This rifle was built prior to 1947. So far, my research has revealed a letter to a previous owner dated Dec. 3, 1947, stating that this is likely "Mr. Gaillard's rifle".

After a few phone calls, it is very likely a rifle once owned by Mr. Frank Gaillard. His son, Edward G., told me that he remembers his father shooting such a beast and would be willing to have a look at it to see if he recognizes it.

The rifle has a Bishop stock (at least the butt plate is Bishop) and the whole unit is in very nice condition. Keep in mind that the .22-250 cartridge was a wildcat until the mid 1960's when Browning started chambering rifles for it, and Remington adopted it, calling it the 22-250 Remington. The wildcats bore various names prior to 1965.

If this rifle indeed the Gaillard rifle, it was a way ahead of its time, and was shooting before 1947. :)

Who needs a 24X zoom scope, when you can just make a scope so long that it reaches all the way to your target!

She’s a beaut!

Beauty rifle but incredible scope, have an infatuation with Unertl's sadly the prices have gone crazy over past few years.

Love those vintage target rifles!
For those not aware, the scope is a 'RTB' ( return to battery) that floats in the mounts, and i have owned many over the years.
When the rifle is fired and recoils back, but it looks like the scope moves forward but in reality the scope stays put.
Before the next shot is fired the scope is pulled back into battery position.
This particular scope is fitted with a recoil spring, but most competitors let thee scope free recoil.
John Unertl ( the scope manufacturer) is considered one of the founding Fathers of modern bench-rest BTW.
he was a German immigrant after the war who also made survey equipment, etc.

What a gorgeous pairing! I have a Unertl 2" Ultra Varmint on one of my BSA Martini rifles. If you write Dewy Greiner -

http://unertl.alexweb.net/for_sale.htm

he can give you all the details of your scope. Mine was made in 1952, and has a 1/8th minute dot - still looks like new, too.

Dewey is DA MAN when it comes to vintage Scopes for sure!:d

cnth: Thank you for the info! It is indeed a grand old rifle. I hope it is the one that belonged to Frank Gaillard. After Christmas I intend to take it to his son and see if he can identify it. No matter, it is a nice old piece of history.

Merry Christmas! :)

certainly is a gorgeous piece Kjohn and if it was in fact owned by Frank Gaillardia , all the better!
are the mounts 6.7 " or 9.3" Center to Center?
the shorter distance would make the clicks 1/4MOA, the longer,1/8MOA

Not sure about the mounts. Don't own the rifle yet.
