Had a beautiful weekend off here in north west Alberta. It was 20* on Sunday and dead calm. It was 29* today with a nice breeze.
Yesterday I went out shooting with my dad at his quarter. I brought my pre '64 M70 300 H&H, and my beater 1905-R Ross factory sporter. It was dead calm and we were shooting off a table at 100m. I've been wanting a pre '64 M70 (or any M70 in 300 H&H!) for a few years. I never dreamed I'd end up with one this nice. Thanks a ton to the great CGNer who made this one available to me. It's a real treasure. I re-sighted the M70 in for my handloads and sent a couple 4 shot groups. My best for the day was 0.67". I think that load will do just fine...
Then I brought out the 1905-R. This rifle is the most amazing sleeper I've found. Its had a really hard life! It belonged to a good friend of mine from the Dawson Creek area. It was given to him by a good friend of his who owned it from probably the 1920s on. When I picked it up from him the barrel was completely shot out. I recently gave it a donor barrel from a MkII 3* military rifle. I cut and crowned it at 26" just like the original. The taper on the 3* barrel was an exact match so the band and front sight base slid right on. I picked up a Williams rear sight and adapted it to work on the old Ross last weekend. Anyway, it shoots really well now. I managed a group right around 1" off the table. Its super light, fast handling, cycling and now has great sights. IMO its the perfect little bush/beater rifle.
I was away working in camp and missed our five year milestone, so I took the wife out for lunch yesterday and then we hiked into a secret spot to go rock hunting (her favorite thing in the world). Naturally, I had to bring the Ross incase yogi wanted a nibble...good thing too as we ran into three black bear on the way back up from the river (luckily for all of us I didn't have to shoot).
Then today we went rock hunting at another spot. Its very photo friendly, so I brought the H&H for a well deserved photo op. This rifle was made in '54. It impresses me more every time I shoot it, look at it or carry it. Any way to tell if its one of the ones with the stainless barrel?
No dings, dents or scratches were introduced in the taking of these photos! All dirt to be gently cleaned away before bed tonight...ha ha. My new baby.
