A Hard Lesson Learned.....

Don't know if there is a lesson to be learned from this one or not but it's a good story. We had a fellow called Bob in our gang [since died] and when he got older his back got bad and he could not walk to good so we used to set him on his watch when we went out and pick him up when we came back in. He started to call, the last few years and started seeing more deer as well. He got some too. This one day we came back with the ATV's to pick him up and he was so excited he was mumbling. Anyhow seems he was calling and had called for a hour or so when he seen this deer coming towards him down in a gully which had quite a bit of cover. Finally got a good look at him and it was the big one. Was turning grey the biggest buck any of us had ever seen. Some of us had seen him before. I had got shooting at him the year before but he was wide open and I never touched him. The dogs had got on him a few times but he would lose them in the many swamps where we hunt. Anyways he was coming to Bob. At about 50 yards he stopped in some cover and nothing moved for some time, then he moved a bit and Bob moved slightly to see better when there was a snort from right behind him. He looked and he just saw the ass end of another big buck disappearing, he turned to look for the big gray one and all he saw was another ass end disappearing. That one buck had come from behind him and was only about 20 yards away. Bob said hhe had a ass on him like a charolais steer. Nobody ever got that buck but a few gangs got shooting at him.

I've seen this happen in our gang years ago with a Remington semi as well. We all learned you drop the bolt on a Remington semi.

Well on my first real hunting trip I missed a couple chances out of stupidity and inexperience.

This one still haunts me and was a good lesson learned in patience

I went out near Peachland in the fall with two of my uncles and a cousin. We split up to go stalk and walk on our own and I went out by myself into the bush and began wandering through the forest listening and doing my thing and I made my way to a small bluff like area that had several low rock bluffs surrounding a little gulch that was also pretty clear of underbrush except for a few blind spots, it looked like a perfect funnel for wildlife (it was)

So i set myself up on one of the rock tops looking down into the little pathway and waited for a bit to take a break before moving on when I heard a branch crack near one of the paths into the bottom between the bluffs. It made a lot of noise, not a huge amount but more than I would expect of a deer so I figured oh well thats probably just my uncle making his way through some thick stuff so I said oh well got up and walked away.

Later that day when we all met up my uncle regailed us with a story of his own misadventure. He told us he was walking through an area and had his head down to watch his step and looked up only to see a huge buck doing the same towards him, but just as he noticed it, it noticed him and they had nearly walked into each other but the thing took off before he could get his rifle up as it was pretty thick brush..

the kicker?

After talking about it turns out the place it happened was only about 100 yards from where I was sitting on that bluff right around the same time I was there.

Geeze!!!!!!! If I had actually waited to see what it was that was making its way right into the easiest firing area in the forest I very well may have scored the big kill of the trip.

Ok. Ill share two stories with you. (sry if my spelling sucks i need to be up at 6:00am no time to look it over. lol)

First one 5 years ago

Ok this was my first time deer hunting. Had a real old what I think was a Ross 30-30. the barrel was bent… and the sights where right over to the left all the way on the front Oiled up the gun and shot at a target I was getting 2-3” groups standing up at 25 yards . (After we got the sights moved over.) But the gun has a weak hammer spring so it miss fired maybe 1-2 times in 10 shots with new ammo.

Ok so first day out hunting we went to take out the guns 6:00am dam we did not have the trigger lock keys!!! So we went home. (2hrs away)

Came back at 10-11 am. And started the day. Seen jack s**t for the day. So did a little target shooting with the guns.

Next day at 4:30 am right when we where leaving I seen that we lost or used up the last of my ammo. And stores did not open till 10:00 and we wanted the morning hunt. So we had some 20+ year old ammo that was sitting out side in a wood shed for most of its life. So we thought we would give it a try lol…

Well at 7-8 am we where out walking around (1-hrs or so). Did not see jack s**t.. Got into the car drove 50-100 yards and there was a little deer maybe the size of my dog. And I told my dad don’t be a ass let it go we would get it next year. So he tell me to bad its dead. Parks the car walks in to where he seen it and bang dropped right where he shot it.

So maybe 10-15 min later when he was gutting it. I saw a doe run out. Maybe 50 yards away. And he had his hands full of blood so he told me take the keys from his back pocket and go unlock the gun and go “run” after it and try to get it . so I did that and had 3-4 shots in my front pocket . so I “ran” up to where I seen the doe. At this time 100 yards from us. Got maybe 50 yards from her and pulled the hammer back. And click.. no ammo. In the gun. Man I was Dum. Deer ran maybe 20 yards and stopped. So I loaded up a shell and bang but I missed the deer stood there and looked at me.. so I tried one more . then click misfire. Pulled the hammer back. And one more misfire . so I tossed it out. Put in one more and same thing miss fire… tried this one like 4 times deer did not move.. no luck so tossed it. And I was yelling to my dad “bring more bullets.” bring more bullets” He yield back I cant I am full of blood and you have the keys to the car.. So… deer standing right there for 5 min right in front of me not moving.. so I thought I would “push it” to where my dad was. So I started to walk up to it. And I got maybe 20 yards away then she started to walk right to where my dad was . so I walked for maybe 10-15 yards and a car drove by on the road (I was maybe 10-20 yards in the bush) then she ran. So I walked back.

And when we where loading up the deer she walked out and stopped in the field so my dad picked up his gun and got her nice big doe. But that sucked seeing we where done hunting for the year so fast.

Last year. (new gun encore endeavor 50cal)
Started hunting at 7:00am 2end day (got a buck first day) went for a long walk seen a nice buck with 2 doe’s so I went in after them. After walking for maybe 30 min I seen them. And they where maybe 100 yards away. And I got on one knee and went to take a shot. Right when I pulled back the hammer my dad called me on the Walkie talkies come back to the car you will never find them… and they ran . so I told him to stfu I seen them right when you called me … I turned off my Walkie and went after them . Walking down a little atv trail. For 1 hrs (playing with my gps and deer calls ) not watching to much for deer’s.. So I put the gps/calls away seeing I was at the end of the trail. Then I heard what I thought was a bear in the bush. So I ran like stink. For maybe 10-15 yards down the trail and turned my head maybe 5-10 yards from me was a nice big buck “bucking a doe if you know what I mean” I was too shocked to lift up my gun. And when they seen me the doe/buck ran then the buck stopped maybe 15-20 yards away started to stomp his feet at me. And was making some real odd sounds and then started to chase me. He got maybe 5 yards from me then ran off (maybe thought I was a doe? Lol…) well after 3 hrs or so I got back to the car. And told my dad what happened. And laughed his ass off and gave me the nickname “doe” …
