The finish is clear, and as for doing work for other folks, well I have Yew sitting in the basement aged 12 years that I have to get at, For making english longbows, and aloth of work goes into a longbow, cow horn nocks carved into art work, has a purpose, to protect the soft yew wood where the string goes on the heavy draw weight bows. Very much fun , and a pass through with a selfbow is common place with yew which has excellent cast. After all the english did pretty well in battle with these weapons.
