This may be of the more clueless questions ever asked :( , but is it (still) "safe/okay" to shoot .455 in a Webley that's been shaved to .45 ACP ? ..:yingyang:

Just curious - thanks !...

I can't see any problem re. pressure etc. with factory equivalent .455 loads, however you might find your firing pin is now too short for reliable ignition due to the cylinder being shaved and the recoil shield/cylinder gap being increased..
Only way to find out is to try,.

No I would say not safe if the cartridge seats all the way your head space will be huge
buy moon clips or 45auto rim brass and get re-loading . On ignition the cartridge will slam back against the recoil sheild Head separation may result .

Noted :yingyang: , thanks ! ....

I already use auto-rim reloads  , and was just curious b/c the .455 cartridges do indeed fit-in.....

This.

I've seen adaptor plates fitted to converted webleys to convert them back to 455, but they usually look permanently attached. No reason why one couldn't have a stand alone plate though.

Yes, there was someone (probably south of the border) who was offering that service, restoring Webley cylinders that had been shaved for .45acp back to full dimension.

Might be worthwhile.

Here it is.

Hmmmm. People have been doing it regularly for about a hundred years. Personally I started about 15 years ago and shot quite a bit of it at reduced loads and with moon clips with zero problems. Factory loaded 45 acp are too hot and will loosen the gun up after a while, but let's face it; the first conversions were done during WW 1, and were probably used in combat. Many more conversions were done in the US just because of the availability of 45 acp ammo. It got to the point where there were few remaining 455 revolvers in private hands.

So handload and keep velocities about the same as 455 with similar bullet weights and you should be good to go.

.455 in a shaved cylinder?

First, find the clown who shaved it and WOOLD him!

.455 in a shaved cylinder will give you a heaspace condition and primers backing partway out. Not the best situation and possible to jam the action.

BEST solution is pick up a couple of hundred .45 Auto Rim brass and load to proper .455 pressures with proper hollowbase projectiles. You will get full accuracy from your Webley (and they were very accurate) and you won't be overpressuring the poor thing and then running undersize slugs down the bore and wondering why the accuracy is terrible.
