Hi All.

Sorry about the What's-it-worth thread. I did my due diligence and I can't really figure this out. I don't need this -- I'm a 6.5x55'er. I have sold a couple rifles way too cheap lately. Cheap is fine. Way too cheap is dumb.

So: For your appraisal is a totally non-matching rearsenaled (JP Sauer Und Sohn?) K98. I still has small dirty-birds. The forward receiver ring was ground and the date is gone -- but there is a faint stamp on the top and the small proof marks and number are still on the sides. Nothing peened. No matching proofs on the barrel by the receiver (There an "H" or an "I"). There are proofs on the sight base of the barrel. Some pitting on the receiver ring (but the photo makes it look worse than in the hand). The bore is shiny and excellent. The chamber is shiny. It's good under the furniture. No butchered screws. It looks like very good shooter.

Oops, this photo is flipped... It's not left-handed! (the edit isn't showing up for me -- might be my cache)

The receiver ring does look a lot worse in the photo... It doesn't look anywhere near that rust-pitty holding it outside -- even getting close....

Based on your description of mismatched refinished eye, it is on;ly a shooter. A nice looking shooter.

Fro me this is a hard one to price out, as I would never consider buying mismatched refinished etc, however, considering the pricing on Yugo's and some of the crappy terrible condition RC's out there, i would start at $500 and up and possibly be pushing the 550-700 range.

I personally believe pricing on some is over inflated, but obviously others are willing to pay.

I'll dissent here. To me, it's a $350-400 scrubbed Mauser with zero collectibility. It was never issued anywhere looking like that. At best it's an 8mm that qualifies for milsurps matches. Enven an m48 is as-issued and collectible in its own right. This one is not.

Ymmv. If I had it, I would make it into a project, maybe build a sniper clone or something. It has no value other than as a functional tool or a collection of parts.

I agree with Ron. Total mm, reblue and scrubbed puts it at the bottom end. Around $400ish.

i think 400 is low considering,it looks clean and in very good condtion, might not be matching but RC k98 rifles sell for 700 plus .This is a mismatched k98 i think its worth between 550 to 700

Yup to all of the above but any retail outlet in Canada would have that rifle at $695 plus tax and shipping on their shelves.

That is what it would bring in a store. On the open market it would likely sell for less. If the bore is excellent it is likely a great shooter. The laminated stock is a plus as well. It is what it is. It's present condition is part of its history, like many thousands of others.

Anywhere between $500 and $700 would be acceptable IMHO

Some interesting observations:

-the barrel is a replacement
-the recoil lug is in backwards, makes me leery of who rebuilt the gun.
-the stock is sanded.

It's not clear who rebuilt that gun, but it looks suspiciously "non-arsenal" to me.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. This is a lot of help. I generally like to sell things pretty fast, so won't be holding out for a near-retail price... I like happy buyers. That's if I sell it. It's probably better than money in the bank... Maybe I'll buy a box of ammo and see. Although I could put the $ toward a really nice Swede...

I inherited it. The guy paid $49 for it, I think.

Seriously... thanks.
