A kid with problems

Hey guys,

I'm new here at CGN and to owning firearms in general. I've shot many .22's, a glock 17 chambered in 9mm, and a remmington 700 in 6mm. That experience was actually made possible by my buddy in the Canadian forces, who in turn directed me here.

As the title suggests I'm under 18 which makes it even more difficult to own guns, especially since I'm the only one in my house with an interest in firearms (even my dog hates guns) :D

I have owned several air guns in the past, and even competed in the regional cadet competition for marksmanship (although I'm not the best shot) :D
Most recently I acquired a scale model 92fs with the help of my dad, unbeknownest to my mom. About a month later she found out at we had to get rid of it :(

So anyway, now I have sold my xbox and am trying to sell old air guns to raise money for a PAL for me and my dad, as well a a MK II savage BTV.
I finally convinced my mom to let all this happen, but the $ is adding up quickly for a guy with no job. :p

As for now, I've been looking into gun clubs. EOHC is where my buddy took me, (great place/people) but the RA center is closer AND has club guns. Anyone know about the membership fees? Their website puts it at around 120 total, but people here say 250?

So anyway, thats my story, thanks for reading!

(small correction, I'm from Ottawa, and the reason why both my dad and I need our PAL's is that I cannot aquire firearms on my own)
Damn liberals ;)

I think it's $200.00 for range membership. RA membership is another cost.
They do have a good selection of handguns to borrow and try as well as ammunition to use in them.
EOHC is a great outdoor range, but nothing is kept on site.

Welcome aboard Mr Smith.
Guns and ammo can cost, but the rewards are endless. learning marksmanship, making new friends, and all the hobbies you can enjoy related to firearms are endless, from collecting to reloading, not to mention hunting.
Good luck...:)

Hi. Looks clear to me. $200 per annum, prorated to when you join(call 'em). Plus the, one time, $25, in advance, for the CPFO mandated club level course and $45 for a single CSSA membership. $70 for a family membership.
If mom gets upset over a model, she'll have an excrement fit over a real one.

Well she seems to be alright with rifles, just not evil black ones.
Thanks for your time guys.

See if Mom will go with you - just this past weekend I spent some time at the range with two young lads and when Mom came to pick them up at the pre-arranged time I spent some time with her - talking about the positive spin off's of getting kids into shooting, self-discipline etc etc; had her shooting a Sig P226 and a TRG 22 by the end of it :)

I like that idea, education is the best way to convice people shooting isnt a sport all about killing and violence. Its bizzare what people come up with, but i guess you've gotta respect that. Does the RA club let you bring your own firearms?

First thing you need to do is get a job!

You get a little more respect when you have one, and it is going to be necessary if you plan on shooting anything other than .22 lr.

Have you even looked at the price of ammo these days?

After that I recommend the hunting angle to firearms ownership. I started with handguns only and when I finally got some rifles and a shotgun and started hunting my family seemed to lighten up about the whole thing.

Hahaha, i like that. However i think that he might be right if i want to actually go anywhere with this. By the time you pay club fees, course fees, ammo fees, liscencing fees, buying your gun, bribing a few people here and there... :D
It adds up, but i definitly wanna do it. Having just turned 14 im not sure of any good places to work, (fast food stuff i guess)?

Thanks again for all your help guys

If you can't find a part time job, start asking your neighbours if they need their grass cut or any yard work. lots of seniors in ottawa looking for this kind of stuff and can't find any kids willing to do it. what part of ottawa are you in?

and yes you can bring guns to the RA, but I think they have some caliber restrictions there. EOHC is nice that you can shoot pretty much anything anytime time from 9am to dusk.

Have a look at Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) if you can swing a trip out to EOHC for one of the Ottawa Valley Marauders matches. www.ovmcowboys.ca
Some, like your Mom, may find the use of handguns, shotguns and rifles in that sort of environment less threatening or intimidating in that sort of scenario.
After all, Who doesn't like cowboys?

I am in pretty much the same situation as you, except that I didn't have to ditch my air gun when my mom found out (she bought it for me :) ). Just save I guess...also you can get cheap enough guns if you get a .22. Its not like you have to start out with an AI AW50 :)

I live in the westboro area. Just today i took your advice and walked up the street door to door asking if lawns needed cutting. Short of a lemonade stand i think the financial front is ok, now i need to work on liscenscing.
More good (great) :D news as well;
My dad found his dads winchester 1890 which i have stripped and cleaned about 5 times in the space of a day. :D Thats another reason not to buy semi auto guns for me; pumps and bolts are caveman simple. Thanks again for your time, great to have this place to talk to knowlegeble people.

Glad to see someone who's here to keep shooting sports alive for the future Canadians. Definately get your Mom into shooting too. She could join us in the Women's Forum. Welcome aboard.

Good point Tiina. Theres also a youth forum here for the young men and women to join and talk about shooting, working etc...
