Here's a few pictures taken yesterday of HMCS Sackville. She's a Flower Class Corvette of the Royal Canadian Navy that operated on the North Atlantic convoy routes during WW II. She spends her summers docked on the waterfront in Halifax. The last of her kind. I knew they were small, but never realized just how small until going on board. They must have been absolutely terrible before the fo'c'sle extension mid-war.

And HMCS Iroquois, a modern Tribal Class destroyer of the Royal Canadian Navy.

You sure that's Iroqois and not Atha-B? IRO doesn't leave the wall nearly as much as she's scheduled to de-commission within the next few years, while Athabaskan continues to give yeoman's service.

There is a great book on the Flower Class Corvettes called "Canada's Flowers". Lots of pictures and drawings.

They were originally a Scandanavian design for Whale catching.

The sad ending of many of them was the steel mills of Hamilton.

Wife & I were in Halifax in early June and missed the Sackville at the normal mooring at the Maritime Museum. I understood she was away getting spiffed up for an upcoming naval reunion or something. We consoled ourselves by visiting the Halifax Citadel which has a great museum and commemorative display.

The Sackville is a nice bit of history, and she sank a ship in the last few years as well during a hurricane.
The CSS Acadia is to my eye a far nicer vessel, and not to be outdone, she was also militarised during the wars, and fitted with a deck gun etc. They make a nice couple of displays.

I want one.

But I sold my 12' solo canoe because I don't have enough space for it, so I guess a corvette isn't really feasible.

my grandfather's brother was killed on a corvette that got torpedoed by a uboat off the coast, Regalbuto was his family name, he never got to have a life...God Bless our boys and gals that have paid the ultimate price for all of us! thnx for the pics!! i never really knew what a vette looked like, thnx for making me think about my uncle.

As terrible as so many of their deaths were in war, you hit on the worst of it, and the true measure of their sacrifice: the rest of their lives that they didn't get to have.

Visited the citadel in 2006 to take part In the centennial when the brits told you folks it's all yours now, and got on the boat back to Blighty. I did donate a 3inch mortar sight to the museum later.

What were the racks on the sides of the main gun turret for? Obviously some kind of rocket but anti sub, smoke, flares or???
