A lightweight 300 Magnum.

Why not?

Here's a question for all you stout-of-heart guys. Not the lightest possible, but what is a reasonable weight for a 300 Mag. Here's the lightest one I own, and it seems about right.

I think I could live with 7 lbs all up... loaded with scope. It wouldn't be fun to shoot off the bench, but for the occasional shot you take when hunting, I don't think it would be so bad.

Is that rifle an FN or a Husky?

I could live with that. By the time it was scoped, equipped with a sling and swivels, and a magazine full of ammo, that would probably put you in the 9 pound range. I certainly wouldn't want a .300 that weighed much less than 8 pounds all rigged up.

Where is the scope and ammo?
Would you like to(hike) carry that all day up and down some West Coast mountain?
I could carry my Browning Ti in 325 WSM and shoot a box or so with little or no discomfort.
My .300 Win mag in the A bolt Stainless was just as easy to shoot due to the cushy recoil pad I installed over the hockey puck.
Your shooting a Bruno?

Your weight looks very reasonable for a 300, or any normal hunting cartridge. Does it handle, and balance well? My lightest rifle is an X-bolt in 300wsm. With Talleys, and 2.5-8 Leupy it is 7lbs 0.4oz. It really isn't bad, I mean if I put 40 down range off the bench yeah it gets noticable. But compared to other lightweights I've shot, the stock/recoil pad do an amazing job for me. I'm shooting 168ttsx, at a smidge over 3000fps.

i have one thats 6.5 lbs and i can't say that its a pleasure to shoot ... like homesteader says... bout 40 rounds downrange and i feel its enough ... i prefer it to be around 8

And have you shot it yet ?

Only about 20 shots on my little 50 yards range ( at the farm) with my PU 3.5X scope, i did noticed that for a 300 mag the recoil is tamed, must be in the stock configuration... JP.

I've got a 6lb 12oz 338WM that shoots well and isn't unpleasant to shoot. At the end of the day, weight has some bearing on felt recoil but fit has a whole lot more. A light rifle that fits won't beat you up nearly as much as a heavier one that doesn't.

I've had several magnums in 270wsm, 300saum, 300wsm, 7mmRM, 300wm, 300wby, .338wm, varying in weight from 7lbs scoped to 10.5 lbs. Currently I'm running a .338wm Sako that is 9.5lbs scoped and is a good balance between carrying weight and recoil absorbtion.

However, the biggest hill I've climbed is 2000ft...:D

My 300 WSM is 5 lbs 15 oz all up with scope etc and my 300 Wby, I've never weighed but is between 7 1/2 and 8 lbs all in. Had several PHs comment on how light the 300 Wby is, but then again they ain't packing it !!! I don't find either one to be uncomfortable to shoot, even off the bags.

Here's the 300 WSM.........

And here's the 300 Wby....

Great pics Douglas, Thanks for sharing !
Love that 300 WSM, tried in vain to find one and settled for one in 260..... bad move.
How old is that picture of you at the bottom ?

My son was 11 on that hunt and he'll be 31 next month...................

The 300 WSM is a modified 700 Ti, Brown 14 oz stock, PT&G speed lock kit and alum bolt shroud. What are you doing with your 260 and is it a 700 Ti?

My new 300wsm should be here in about 2 weeks ... its going to be in the 5.5 lbs , Im putting the new NXS compact 2.5-10x42 w/AO on it so that going to bump it up to 7 lbs scoped. My last 300wsm was also just under 7 lbs scoped. I cant say it was the most fun in the world to shoot but ... I did mind it

Nice rifles! I was going to ask about the stock on your 300WSM, so thanks for answering. I have a first gen 30-06 700Ti that I'd like to do a bit of work on --- your's has provided me a some inspiration. At the least, I want to replace the J-lock bolt shroud, but your stock has me thinking as well...

I've got a Stevens 200 in 300 win mag, official weight is 6 3/4 lbs. I wouldn't want one any lighter than that really.

She's a bit stout with 4000 ft/lbs handloads.

You never notice the recoil in the field however...

Just call up Mark at Brown Precision and tell him you want their 14 oz Kevlar stock for a long 700 Rem............then sit down.......REALLY !!! Make sure you have lots of room on your Visa............The PT&G stuff ain't so bad though a few hundred bucks for everything. Dave will supply the aluminum firing pin and bolt shroud to get rid of that awful J lock contraption quite reasonably actually, and drop another 3+ ounces off your rifle. AND they both ship to Canada !! Unless something has changed in the past few months.

It is a 700 Ti and was a huge disappointment as a 260.
I spent a year trying every 6.5 bullet and powder combination I could get my hands on and three shot groups were between three and four inches.... sometimes more.
So after a lot of frustration I sent it off to my favorite gunsmith for a closer look and he determined that the barrel was flawed right from the factory.
After a short discussion I asked that he re-barrel it in a " surprise me " cartridge, and so a few months later Bill Leeper handed me a Shilen barreled 700 Ti in 270 / 08.
It weighs about 6 oz. heavier than it did as a 260 and is consistently one of the finest shooting rifles I have ever had, almost anything loaded from 110 gr. up to and including 160 gr. will make 1/2 MOA or smaller groups.....
