I was in the mood to get back to the roots of the Ar/M-16 so I built this today.
A late 50's Colt parts kit on a old Palmetto Armory lower.
All the parts came from an original rifle except the charging handle which I will be replacing with a correct triangle one from the era.
I love these lightweight rifles!
Notice the old type dust cover.

The brown grips were the very first, the army didn't like the color so they had to paint them green until they came out with solid black grips. I think I still have some with a bit of the paint still on them but I like the mottled brown look.

Back in the day, when a lightweight carbine was a lightweight carbine, and not buried under 10 lbs of frickin' lasers and what not.

Nice.

Unfortunately as it was an issue weapon at one time it has had some upgrades from the original. I am going to fix them over time as funds allow.
First thing to go is the 1966'ish 1-12 twist barrel. The very first were 1-14 twist.
