Alright, finally got her together from bits and pieces.

I was going to buy a Colt SP1 but hit a family financial situation a ways back which resulted in me losing the chance.

Decided to build my own retro AR15.

Total price tag is well under $800 but also including a lot of trades and haggling lol

My "new" AR15 A1:

She tips the scales at 6.5 lbs

Finally have my dream AR

Hopefully once the market gets back to non retarded mode, I can track down an old Armalite lower for her for less than a kidney.

Huge thanks to Mugwug for all this as well.

Range report to follow hopefully this long weekend coming :D

Thanks guys :D

Only parts I couldn't track (other than a more "acceptable" lower) was the original "flat" hand guard slip ring vice the A2 and beyond flanged delta one and an original pencil barrel.

Had to settle with a 20" government barrel.

Can not wait to shoot her next weekend!

Nice, well done sir. Do you happen to have the 3 prong flash hider wrench? If yes, could I borrow it?

I don't Sir. I'm sorry.

I actually used a thin flat bar and passed it through the tines to torque it on. That and a touch of the blue loc-tite.

Ah, it's funny this was brought up. I just snagged one of these units off the EE, and I was wondering how you would torque it on.

Hadn't thought that much about it, I'd just figure something out when the time comes, I always do.

That's a tip tho, I'll keep that in mind.

I was on the other hand wondering the correct way to orient it. Not really sure which way is up, but haven't bothered to research it yet either.

Everything I found (mostly pictures from the book "The Black Rifle") has one of the prongs at the 12 o'clock position.

Which would make sense as I guess you wouldn't want a gap between the prongs at the 12 o'clock as it might impede your sight picture during rapid firing due to gas/muzzle flash. Maybe that is the reason, I'm just speculating.

That is how I oriented mine though.

Yeah, that's the way it looks the nicest.

I think it's safe to assume this thing doesn't mitigate muzzle rise at all. A couple things I was considering, was having a opening at 12'oC to maybe help muzzle rise a bit, and a prong a 6 might help to not kick up as much when prone. Doesn't seem like it'd be that effective at either, but it would not hurt.

Meanwhile, I can't help but be reminded of a unit like the PWS Triad. Might be worth a try with a prong at 3'oC.

I guess this is a hider you could get a little experimental with, index it different ways and see if you can tell any diff.

Can you link me to someone in canada that sells the buttstock?

A1 parts are hard to track up here as we adopted the M16 late in the game '85.

By then we were already on the longer A2 butt stock and A2 rifle.

Hell I'm still trying to find a proper A1 stock screw :(

A friend of mine got a couple shipped in from the States and I traded for it.

AR15.com is a great place lol That is all ;)

Looks good Travis!! Classy!! I like it. I've been thinking of doing one of these lately. But with a twist. Do a full set of furniture out of wood. Take my time and do a real nice finish on it. Maybe your brother could do for the AR what he did for the cz858/vz58? ;) ;)
