Hi All

I have a Rem 700 BDL in 243 Win and I want to put on a good quality scope for varmint hunting. I am prepared to spend $7-8 hundred taxes in.

I would like to have;
30mm tube
4-12 or 14 or 16 magnification or so
40 - 44 mm obj bell to keep scope low
side parallax adj
BDC reticle

I have spent hours looking at manufacturers sites and they all suck.
Most do not describe their own product lines well or even highlight the differences in the various categories?
Search functions do not include the basic features as above
No one provides pics of the reticles with the scope?
Really frustrating....

Go buy a Leupold scope in a VXII 3.5-10 power x 40mm and you are good to go.
Will have more than enough light and clarity for you and the gun.
Just my .02 worth and having owned 20 plus scopes over the years,
rob

No need for a 30 mm tube if its a dedicated varmint gun and I personally would go to a 6-24 power...the more power the better for small varmint like gophers and magpies. Everyone has different brand preferences here..but you should have no problem finding a good optic for $800....manufacturers are really fighting for that market ($800-1000). Bushnell, Nikon, Burris, Vortex all make nice optics in that price point.

Bushnell 2.5-16 x42 6500 elite. Good optic in its price range, although i find the clarity at max mag average. Another suggestion is Sightron, and Jerry at Mystic Precision...site sponsor. Nikon are very clear and well priced in their segments.

Go to a local gun store....find the one you want....search for it here at site sponsors or the EE.

I prefer a 30mm tube. I target shoot and coyote hunt so I like the adjustment range and light gathering even if I use a smaller objective lens.

I do have scopes I varmint hunt with with 1" tubes so it's just a personal choice.

I wouldn't waste my money on a BDC. Get a mil dot or mil hash and KNOW what your come-ups are, or KNOW where your holdovers are.

Way easier to know a 1.3 mil holdover at 315m and send it than dial it or worse, guess it on a bdc.

I shoot a Vortex 4-16 FFP EBR-1 with a reflex on a 45 deg. picatinny, a Bushnell Tactical elite 6-24, Leupold 3-9 and a Burris 1.75-5 on my different yote guns.

The Vortex gets the most use however you may like a different set up. Most of my varmint shots are within 150m except on harrassed already called/shot at yotes.

Nikon Monarch 4-16x42 or 5-20x44. Good quality for a reasonable price, and a wide adjustment range.

A 30mm tube does not increase the light transmitting capacity of a scope, over a similar scope with a 1" tube.

A bigger set of lenses always equals more light, everything else being equal.

Burris C4 4.5-14

Don't have side parallax but front bell one and no BDC but has wind hash marks and you can dial up! Or than that has everything your looking for.

Bushnell legend HD, Nikon monarch or prostaff 5 are some 1" tube ones. Vortex might be your best bet to have all your options in one scope.

I think I will save my money and go with a Steiner 4-20x50 GS3 Riflescope (Steiner Plex S7 Reticle) Model 5007. Any good spots to buy in Canada?

There is a member here on CGN who just put up a Nikon Monarch 3 6-24x50 for $550 shipped. Had this come up a couple weeks ago before I bought a Prostaff 5 4.5-18x40 I wouldn't be posting this....I'd be messaging that good fellow an "I'll take it!" ;)

I just bought the S-TAC 4x20x50 MOA and I couldn't happier with it. I was very hesitant since I couldn't find a lot of reviews but this scope meet all my expectations.

Quick background: I wanted some glass for a new build that I want to use for some long range shooting but have it still be capable for hunting. I was looking to spend $1500. By luck, just before I bought the Vortex PST, I discovered the S-TAC. It's half the cost and as good or better.

Jerry's review covers all the points but to reiterate:
- the glass is A+... Especially for a $700-$800 scope.
- the tactical dials track and hold perfectly.
- I wanted FFP but the S-TAC is SFP... but the MOA reticle is fine enough that I don't feel hindered at -25 yards.
- Lifetime warranty. Not as bullet proof as Vortex's, but if you don't mistreat the scope the warranty is there.
- 30 mm tube that you wanted
- side parallax that you wanted
- it's got a bigger bell but I've got it on low rings on my Savage 10 TR... and one negative that I read about the Savage 10 TR is that some scopes won't fit the picatinny rail. I don't have a problem.

Like I said, I was hesitant but I'm very happy. If you don't NEED a big name scope check this out. I compared it to my buddies Vortex PST and Nightforce. IMO it is as good or even beats the Vortex. And in terms of glass clarity, it's right up there with Nightforce (but the Nightforce is, well, a Nightforce. It's arguably the best scope out there and 4x's as much.)

I was also looking at the Vortex PST when I was searching for a scope. I also looked into the SIII line but I didn't want to go upto 6-32, then I read Jerry's review in the 3-15x42 and 4-20x 50 and ordered one up in 4-20x 50 right away and couldn't be happier.

I spent around $710.00 on the scope and the thing is impressive coming in at that price range. The glass is clear and the scope cope does everything Jerry says it does, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one at all.

I have mine mounted in ATRS low rings on a Savage 10tr and have plenty of clearance as well. I am very happy with the scope overall, especially at the price point.

How's Sightron's warranty? Is it like Leupold where if you run it over Leupold will still replace it?

Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

"This warranty does not cover damage that
occurs in shipment or failures that result from accidents,
misuse, abuse, unauthorized alterations,
theft, modifications or acts of God."

But a quick Google search seemed to bring up a lot of happy warranty customers.
