I was the lucky guy in Durham Outdoors March draw for something I’ve thought about picking up for years and never got around to it; an old Cowboy style single action revolver. I’ve had it for a month, but my range is closed. I finally shook the moths out of my wallet and went to one that was open to put some rounds through it.
What a hoot! I didn’t get a lot of shooting in, but it’s a really nice, soft shooting, accurate pistol. I’ve read so many reports & reviews on both ends of the scale; great & terrible. This one is very positive.
It’s a nicely finished, well built pistol. the matte black finish is really nice, very even & well done. fit & finish is great, nice attention to details. Really nice, crisp trigger, I’m guessing around 3 1/2, maybe 4 pounds. fixed sights are crappy and hard to see, just like they should be on this style of gun, but the alignment is excellent; it shoots where you point it, about an inch low at 15yds, so it should be pretty close to POA=POI at 25, no tendency to wander side to side.
It’s a great match for my Rossi 1892 carbine in .357mag. The Chiappa is .38spl, and although I didn’t push it too hard, I did run some warm loads and it didn’t complain at all. It’s such an easy gun to load for, it’ll be fun working up a load that it really likes. I guess the only thing I really don’t like about the gun is the black plastic grips, but I’ve got some really pretty cocobolo & a few feet of nice, Honduran mahogany. I’ll figure out what looks best, and make some new grips for it.
I’m usually one of those guys that if it weren’t for bad luck, I wouldn’t have any. I was sort of expecting it would turn out to be a crappy shooter, but I’m REALLY happy; it’s just the opposite...it’s a well made, nicely finished, great shooting pistol. I’m looking forward to putting a lot of rounds through it this summer
