A max bullets for hunting

I’ve used the A-Max successfully on deer, black bear, sheep, and paper.
In 30-06 with 168’s, 7mmRM with 162’s. Close and far.
They fragment, no doubt about that, but nothing hit with them ever moved an inch, other than dropping to the ground.
They can and will damage meat, so I generally place them in the heart, lungs, or just below the head in the neck, less waste of premium cuts that way.

I hear the ELD-X are similar when it comes to fragmentation, have a bunch of 178’s and 200’s to try out eventually.

The Amax line used to be classed as a hunting bullet by Hornady. That changed at some point and they started making the 750 Amax and stuffing it in 50 BMG cases for military contracts…….
There are a few pics of old Amax bullet boxes with “thin skinned game” designation on them floating around on the ‘net. I think Jordan has possibly posted it before(?).

I’ve personally used the 75/105/162/168 Amax’s on coyotes/wolves/sheep/whitetails/muleys/black bears/elk/and moose, and have zero qualms about continuing to do so.
Don’t expect to break both shoulders with an impact velocity above 2500 fps or so, but do expect that placement to kill a deer RFN.

A 178 out of an ‘06, if you try and break the offside shoulder by going through ribs first, instead of breaking the near side shoulder and hoping for lungs you’ll be fine. At high impact velocities you really need to consider placement if you are using soft bullets.
