Ok I had this nice long winded post and then timed out :mad:.

So the short version. I have found one of my boxes of 75 gr A-Max to be inconsistent in length from base to ogive. It was like I had two distinct sizes of the same bullet (about 0.025"). A quick check of some Hdy 75 gr BTHP and Nos 80 gr BTHP showed a very small difference (within 0.01"). Has anyone notice this?

I don't have enough time to begin with. I want to do as little sorting as possible. I'm going to get Lapua brass for that reason :)D for now). I want to be able to say the same about my bullet choice. Can I purchase a brand of commonly available match bullets that are more consistent than others or did I just get a few bad apples in my box?
 
I was looking at the 155 Amax I been using in my 308 and the BC is quite abit lower then the 155 Custom Comps I was using before.

Hornady is having a hard time copeing with supply and demand and they recently changed there product packages which didn't help anything... I think they are running hard and faster then before and quality has taken the back seat for a while till they get caught up... I dont know why they are still unable to meet demand.
 
At one time I couldn't get 155 Amax bullets to shoot. Tried them again last year and they shoot very well at 300m. I am shooting at DCRA targets with iron sights, a jacket and sling. Scores between 50.5V and 50.7V are not uncommon during practice. Looks like the 155 AMax's will be my new 300 yard/metre load for the ORA and DCRA this year.

That's the story I'm hearing.


I'm tempted to pick some up. Besides, that red tip looks effen' cool when you're showing off ammo to a friend. :D
 
I have never had the pleasure of measuring and sorting bullets. Life is way too short.

However, I do shoot ALOT of hornady Amax in all calibres over the years.

Yes, QC can be wonky and I have had batches with the tips on crocked but Hornady quickly replaced them

In shooting, they have done a very nice job and I consider them my go to bullet for extreme range shooting. The 7mm 162gr Amax has done superbly WAY out there.

So has the 75 and 80gr 22cal AMax. The 30 cal 155gr is my favorite in this cal. - the 208gr is becoming a favorite in some LR circles

Personally, I open a box, load them and shoot them. Either they will or they will not.

For match/BR consistency, I can suggest Berger and Lapua. Sierra has had their issues too.

Based on performance vs dollars spent, the Amax is hard to beat and why they cannot keep up with demand.

If you are unhappy with the batch you got, give hornady a call and see what they can do for you. Might surprise you.

The best groups out of the rifle so far were from my other batch of A-Max 75 gr. I was hoping that this box may be an exception as the price is right and they are easy to find. It's good to see some are liking the 208 gr as I have 200 and have been looking forward to putting some together for my Norma Mag. It was prob just a bad lot. :D One of the tips was spherical.

i had same problem with measurements at ogive around .030 difference,called hornady and there supposed to send me 1000 bullets.haven't received anything yet it's been a year.I'm not impressed. these were 52 amax
 
I am having great performance from the 162 gr 7MM Amax I got from Jerry. .5 MOA at 800 yds. Also 2 friends are using the 180's in their Sako .308 TRG's with excellent results
