A Modernized SKS

What would the cost be for the modifications if I sent my sks with tapco stock ad mags? I'm very interested by this, I love my sks its extremely reliable I just don't like the ergonomics of it.

modified crapco is still crapco.

That pistol grip held on by a screw into plastic... Did you make it screw into the receiver somehow to pull the receiver down ? Seems like a cool project, I have yet to find a stock better then the original wood. Timber smiths are thick and heavy, crapco is well I mean name implies, archangel isn't terrible but adds a ton of weight and im still not a fan. Only one ive tolerated was the Monte Carlo style. Its not miserable. This coming from a guy who loves tacticool stuff... Way I see it, 260 for rifle, 260 for stock (tax included) that's 520 you could have put down on a nice vz.... Not to mention people who want optics, rails ect...

the pistol grip nut is a threaded bracket welded to the trigger group. It's as secure as any stamped trigger guard. Steel on steel contact. I agree you can't beat the factory stock for weight and balance. Plus it has the barrel cross bolt, which is important

I have an ATI stock and its seen 300 rounds or so, taken apart and put together a whole bunch of times and is still solid and fine feeling. I like the wood but it is so short for my arms.

I LOVE IT!!! bringing the trigger group and pistol grip ahead looks amazing! and probably feels like it too. If you could elaborate more in the future about how exactly you've achieved this and how it works id be mostly likely interested in buying a setup! I bought a VZ 58 as a more AK like substitute for my SKS but this has got me excited! you can never dump to much money into an SKS it seems haha.

Very nice design! In for updates! Ditch the tapco mags and make it accept 10 round pistol mags would be my only opinion. Id buy another sks for this

Edit: my bad i didnt notice it was a modified tapco stock. Still cool tho!

Modding the receiver for AR-15 pattern mags always seemed more like a fix than a solution to me. Especially since this system changes the balance of the rifle enough that a pistol variant is no longer out of the question. Need a new machined receiver, of course

Some close-up photos showing that the pistol grip is attached to the trigger group frame, and hopefully providing a better view of the safety which is obscured in the video. Also, i'd like to note that the magazine retention system does not rely on the stock whatsoever

There are some differences between this function-test prototype and the final design.
First, the trigger used will be the factory trigger, connected by a linkage, while this is a single piece extended through the pistol grip nut.
The magazine retention tabs will be located on the trigger group so that the rifle breaks down exactly like an un-modified SKS.
The safety lever will be ambidextrous, with tabs on both sides of the pistol grip.
The trigger guard magazine release has been redesigned to simplify manufacture and increase ergonomics.

Any reason you decided to sink the trigger into the grip? wouldn't it have been good to have it just line up with the front?

How do the mags hold in? what does the mag look like by itself?

Would be decent if it was a little more refined.

The trigger extends back through the pistol grip and interfaces with the factory linkage just like the unmodified rifle

The mag looks like a Tapco mag with the duckbill cut off. They hold in because the tabs that anchor the trigger guard magazine release also change the pivot point of the magazine on the mag catch, so that when a magazine is inserted into the receiver, it cannot swing clear because of the contact with the front of the magazine well.

I know the finish on this prototype is rough. This is a function test rifle which showcases the system's capabilities, only.

Nice to see someone working/moding an SKS. I have had plans of doing something like that,....now you see where the SKS hammer is....just imagine that its an AR 15 hammer and trigger. They will fit! I have the parts, but haven't had the time. So go and buy and AR 15 lower parts kit and clean up that trigger group. :) Better trigger group...less moving part...etc.
But that said, very nice job!!
Cheers
Brian
