A More Reliable And User Friendly Deer Rifle

Most reliable? ... bolt-action with CRF

  • Mauser actions proved themselves in trench warfare; several modern derivatives available
Most user-friendly? ... depends on what you plan to use it for

  • medium weight / general use --> Winchester Model 70
  • light weight / mountain rifle --> Kimber Montana

This, but, you forgot to include crf rugers (mkII's & hawkeyes)
In fact, I would rank them:
1 - ruger
2 - a tie between Winchester and kimber
3- most m98's

Of course were talking bolts here, you did say reliable and user friendly and although we're splitting hairs here, IMO these would be at the top of the list.
Still nothing wrong with the remmy 760 though, great rifle, for sure!

I've hunted and shot with lots of bolt action, all milsurp or converted to sporters. Last few years I have hunted with a 1950's 94 in .32WS. If there is anything nicer to carry than a 94, then I've missed it. :p

Whatever works for the person doing the work would be my suggestion. One of my first deer rifles was a "sportered" 98 that must weigh over 10 lbs. Nasty thing to carry, but put a fair bit of meat on the table.

I now have my pick of umpteen rifles, but have never used a pump nor an autoloader.

my first was a .303 no 4 mark 1,with 180 gr. round nose bullets ,followed by .308 win. in lever action Savage 99. and .270 win. in Savage 110 ,all good for deer and black bears.

A browning A-Bolt or X-Bolt micro series would be an easy handling rifle, chambered in 708 or 308. Its a short action bolt with 60 degree bolt lift with a handy tang safety. Also has a detachable mag and sports a 20" barrel. Would be suited for hunting in the bush and capable of shots out to 300 yds or more. Its also a light weight rifle.
