Looking to buy a new .45. I like the different SIG 1911s, S&W 1911 and Kimbers. Any comments about these or any other are appreciated (can include models other than the 1911 platform). Looking for reliability, quality, and looks.

From the models I listed, the price range would be between $1200-1700. But price doesn't matter, I just wanted opinions with regards to the three factors I listed- reliability, quality, and looks.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I'm in much the same situation, and as you mentioned S&W as one of the brands, I have an opportunity to pick up a 45 ACP S&W, model 4506. Anyone know anything about them??

JP...I have a 4506-1 for the last 3 years and it's one super gun in 45 caliber, fed everything and had no problems at all after more then 5K rounds...
I can say is 100% accurate as my Kimber 1911

as for the 1911 question, I personally recommend Kimber or STI ...ones that meet the three: reliable, quality & good looks

You smooth tslker you;). Already it's starting to look like "I need" it:p. That's one of two handguns I'll be going for once I return back to B.C. I haven't seen that many of them available for sale, what's the going price in top condition? Are they a discontinued model?

Depends what you are aiming to spend....

You can get a shootable Norc 1911 in the $400 area or pay upwards of $4K for a Wilson custom. Or anything in between.

I do not own any of these brands but I did some work on two or three of each, not the same models however. None of them landed on my bench due to reliability problems. All of them were almost new and well looked after. Owners of those guns knew what they wanted and why. What they wanted was to prepare their guns for some kind of competision. I had them apart and back together several times and here are my findings.

On arrival all of them passed all on-bench tests required from the 1911 to be reliable and function smoothly. Parts were fitted properly and only small touches were necessary here and there to make the operation of controls smoother and easier. Trigger job was a must in every case since no 1911 will have 1.5-2.5lb trigger out of the box. Metal finish on the outside and bluing(where applicable) were superb on all those guns. Hidden(unexposed) metal surfaces were good with the advantage to S&W. Amount of barrel lock-up was adequate with advantage SIG. Test firing all those guns was a pleasure.

You cannot go wrong with any of these guns. I agree with those who suggest STI which is my favourite brand. May be you should consider it too, from Trojan up. Within the same price range quality is equal and it's high. Look is something very subjective and depends on your personal taste. If I were in your shoes I'd go for SIG because of its legendary reliability.

Based on your price range, it looks like you are willing to spend a bit more to get a quality 1911. If that's the case, I would suggest looking for a Dan Wesson 1911. They are often a bit harder to come by and sell in the $1400 - $1800 range depending on model and features, but are well worth the money. They are probably the finest production 1911 out there and hold their own against many of the semi-custom 1911's on the market.

Armafix-when you suggest the SIG you're speaking of the 1911 platform right?

I also have to admit the Dan Wesson has really caught my eye-it looks like an extremely elegant but reliable pistol all around.

Highly recomend the STI products, (mine is a Spartan) if you decide on a Spartan it leaves you with money for ammo and extra magazines....
